Chapter 33
"Harry, would you care to explain what this is?" My father asked, holding up what I presumed to be the murder weapon.
"Aiden's gun."
"How do you know it's his?"
"I remember Aiden saving up for that gun. He has 'Best' engraved on the side of it." He pointed to the tiny wording on the gun inside of the bag.
"And why is that written there?"
"I think it's pretty self explanatory. He assumes he's the best at everything, but yet his self esteem is so low he needs the constant reminder of something he wishes he was." Harry smirked.
I couldn't help but to laugh at his reply, and Aiden's reaction was even better. His mouth nearly reached the floor. I even saw the judge stifled a laugh.
"Sure. Now tell me, do you enjoy drinking?"
"Yes I do. Although I drink much, I can handle myself and what's going on around me.“So then that night of the murder, you were completely, mentally there?”
“Yes, I knew what was happening, but my mortuary skills were lacking due to the alcohol. I wasn’t incoherent, just slower than normal.”
“But you were still all the way there to know what happened?”
“Yes.”
My father nodded, and walked back to his table, shuffling through some papers. He grabbed one sheet, whilst murmuring a few words to Aiden. He cleared his throat, and walked back to Harry, placing the sheet of paper before him.
“Now tell me Mr Styles, what is this?”
Harry peered at the paper. His confident smile faltering to a frown.
“My little sisters death certificate.”
Harry never mentioned a sister to me before. Let alone a dead sister. I looked at Will for some answers, but his head was bowed in sadness. Sara was rubbing his arm comforting him. She mouthed to me she would explain later. Looking back at Harry, I saw a tear stream down his cheek. He didn’t bother to wipe it away.
“Now would you say you were upset after her death, mad even?” My dad asked.
Harry’s expression changed from sad to angry, maybe even pissed off.
“As upset as you were when your wife died.” He retorted.
He really just brought up my mum? He just had too, didn’t he?
“There will be no personal references on the attorneys Mr Styles.” The judge called.
I looked at him in amazement. Amazement that he really brought her up. Did he have too?
“I would watch your mouth before you speak off of my deceased wife, and the mother of the one you call a friend.” My father sneered.
It was like Harry had snapped back from the angry person he was only a few seconds ago. His eyes now found mine; pleading for me to forgive what he just said.
I gave a small, sad smile. Hopefully, from that, he’d understand that mentioning her like that was not okay, and that it hurt a little bit, mentioning her like she was nothing
“I’m sorry. I just don’t enjoy when people talk about her like she was nothing to me.
“As do I for my wife. Now I’ll ask you one last question before I’m done here. How mad were you when you had found out the news? What was your initial reaction.”
“I was very mad. But all the anger was towards myself, because I was responsible for her death. E-Evie died a year and a half ago and she was only three when it happened. I was mad with myself because I refused to do a job for Aiden. This was the first time I ever denied, and this was the first time I realized I should take his word seriously. H-He said if I didn’t do what I was told, my sister would get it. Of course I called bluff because I never thought someone could be so heartless to hurt an innocent little girl. But he did. He took her away that night and I never saw her again. He told me to lie to everyone about what happened to her, and I did, except for my family. I lied to the people that issued the death certificate, and told him she went missing. And after no leads as to what happened, they declared her dead. After that day, I listened to Aiden, and did as I was told. I wasn’t angry with him because it was my fault and it was my consequence. My anger had been aimed at myself, and is the reason why I hold so much anger in myself. Because I don’t think my family has forgiven me, but I don’t expect them to do so, when I have yet to forgiven myself. It was my fault, and I have to live the rest on my life knowing she didn’t get to experience life because of my selfish ways.”
