“Drive? Seriously?” I asked in surprise.
“Of course, how else were you planning to get there?” Mina said.
“I don’t know, fly maybe?” I replied.
“Too high profile. Now, let’s see. Who are you going with Ella?” Mina said.
Before I could reply Luke answered, “She’s going with us.”
“Alright then. Ian?” she said.
“I’m staying here. The last time I ventured to Ahina things didn’t quite turn out according to plan.” he said.
Mina nodded, the look still in her eyes, though under control now. She turned around and walked away, down the gravel driveway. I frowned and looked to Luke. He shook his head slightly, before turning to face his father. Ian stood up to his full height and regarded the three of us steadily.
“You three better be careful while you're there.” he said, and we nodded simultaneously. He nodded and then turned on his heel and walked back to the house, the door slamming behind him. Before we could do anything he came back out with a glass of something that looked like water in a tall glass.
“Here, drink this.” he said to me. I frowned and he continued, “Trust me, you’ll need it.”
I looked at Luke with a question in my eyes. “You’re not Angelus, therefore once you enter the boundaries of Ahina your body will be affected. This keeps you from throwing up the contents of your stomach.”
“But I thought I was an Angelus.” I said.
“You are, but not a full one. You are still Undetermined and undergoing the change.” Ian said.
I bit my lip and looked at the three of them, before deciding that I had trusted them so far and it made no sense to stop now. I reached out and took the glass, drinking it quickly. The taste was horrible, but I fought from gagging.
“What was that?” I asked, coughing. Michelle hit my back.
“It’s infused spring water from the Heia Valley in the Shadow World.” she said. Before I could reply Luke interjected.
“Looks like we’re driving.” he said. Then he walked past us to the Volvo and got in. Michelle and I followed him and got in as well, me riding shotgun.
“Where exactly is Ahina?” I asked.
“Closer than you think.” Michelle said. Luke shook his head with a smile on his lips before doing a U-turn and going down the driveway. I saw no sign of Mina as we drove, though she had been walking this way minutes earlier. Before I could comment I suddenly felt tired, tired as I had never been before. Each blink was terribly hard and I was getting more exhausted with each second. From far away I heard Luke’s voice, as if we were on opposite ends of a tunnel.
“Sleep Ella, it’s how the water works.” he said gently. I couldn’t find the strength to respond or protest, and I let my eyelids fall as I collapsed into dream world.
~O~O~
Normally when I wake up it’s a quick process. One moment I’m in deep sleep and the next I‘m lying awake in bed. But not this time, I found myself drifting between the edges of sleep and reality. I was lying on what felt like grass, though I was unsure because it was as comfortable as a bed. I heard footsteps coming towards me. I forced my reluctant body into a sitting position, rubbing the sleep from my eyes. My wings stretched out, the feathers moving in the slight breeze. I looked up and smiled at the sight. Luke walked towards me, shirtless with his golden wings sparkling in the sunlight. I smiled at him and he smiled back, a brilliant flash of white between perfect lips.
“Hello beautiful.” he said, dropping onto the ground beside me.
“Hello yourself.” I said, giggling as I felt the tips of his wings brush mine. I looked up, seeing my silver and his gold feathers complement each other perfectly.
“They say your true love's wings complement your own perfectly. Looks like we were made for each other.” Luke said quietly, his eyes meeting mine, a small smile grazing his lips. The golden pools swallowed me whole. I couldn’t look away, and I never would if I was given a choice. Suddenly a wave of feeling crashed into me. It consumed me and took away all my inhibitions. I never knew love could be so strong, but now I saw it shining in his glittering gaze. I felt my body shaking at the force of this newfound emotion; but it was tinged with a heart wrenching sadness. The mixed emotions flooded my entire being.
“Ella...” he whispered.
“Yes?”
“I’m so sorry.”
He cocked his head and his lips parted slightly. I swallowed lightly and bit my lip. Our gaze never left each other as we began to lean forward. I was no longer in control, the storm of love and sorrow had taken hold. We moved closer, until there was almost nothing separating us. I was breathing in what he had exhaled. His scent permeated the air around us. His hand rose slowly and he pushed away a lock of hair that had fallen into my face. He pushed it behind my ear, before moving his hand to cup my cheek. My entire body trembled at the touch.
“My love.” he whispered in the space between us. I closed my eyes against the wave of sadness that threatened to wipe away the love inside me.
Then his lips were on mine. I almost fainted at that first touch. It was tentative, as if he were asking my permission. Our mouths brushed each other, barely a kiss, but the rush of sensation was overwhelming. I leaned forward, and he responded, his lips now pressed firmly against my own, moving slowly. I savored the sensation. His hand moved down my cheek to the back of my neck, I gasped lightly at the touch and the kiss deepened I moved my hands to his shoulder and hair. My body burned wherever we touched, my lips on fire as we kissed. Our lips parted at the same time and I lost a bit more of myself as I fell deeper. He tasted of something that I could only describe as Luke, different to his scent, but just as entirely unique. The conflicting emotions were at war inside me, and I moved closer to Luke so as to push them away. I lost myself in the sea that was Luke, carried away by his touch and his taste.
Suddenly a sharp pain stabbed my abdomen. I pulled away from him and looked down to see a spot of red rapidly growing to a stain on the front of my shirt. The pain made me gasp and I lifted my head to look at him. I stared at Luke's eyes which had turned cold adn unfeeling. The Demonate's dagger fell to the grass. I opened my mouth to say something but he beat me to it.
“You made the wrong choice Ella.”
