AJ was met with the sad silence and loneliness of her house. It was odd since in her universe, when she got home, her sister or her parents would usually be there waiting for her. This was one thing she could add to the list of dislikes.
Gio had offered to come inside and keep her company, but she'd politely turned down his offer. She wanted some time to herself since she'd barely gotten any ever since she woke up that morning. Plus, eventually she'd have to do her homework, which would not have gotten done if he was there. His presence alone was a distraction.
As she was walking to the kitchen, a thought popped into her head, something she should've done as soon as she found out she was swept away from her universe. Her sister may have been gone temporarily, but her parents weren't! She quickly pulled her phone from her pocket, now full of excitement and dialed the number she knew by heart, pressing the phone to her ear and waiting for the person on the other line to pick up.
"Hi, you've reached Denise, please leave a message at the tone and I'll get back to you as soon as possible."
All hope she had to hear a familiar voice flushed down the drain. She huffed a breath of frustration, and impatiently waited for the beep so she could leave her message.
"Hey, mom. Just wondering how you and dad's cruise is going. I know you're on vacation, but.. can you call back as soon as possible? I miss you guys so much. I hope you're ok and safe and I love you guys. Bye." she said, before hanging up.
She tried her father's phone once, getting angry when he didn't pick up either. The house could've been burning down! She could've gotten taken and that phone call was her kidnapper offering her life for a ransom! But they were too busy on a cruise, probably sipping juice from coconuts to pick up their only daughter's phone call.
AJ knew she was over exaggerating, but she was being flooded with so many emotions she couldn't tell one from the other.
After grabbing a snack consisting of a small bowl of strawberries and a Caprisun, she made her way to her room. Sitting down at her desk, she pulls out her laptop and homework, figuring she'd get it out the way.
An hour and a half later, when her playlist and her homework was almost finished, the doorbell unexpectedly rang. She figured if it was anybody she wasn't expecting, it had to be Giovanni.
She sighed and stood up form her bed covered in papers, heading downstairs to the front door. She looked through the peep hole and gasped, her eyes widening before she quickly stepped back and opened the door, revealing a short girl with beautiful milk chocolate brown skin and pin straight dark hair.
"Aurora Janet, why are you so bad at responding to your text messages?" AJ laughed, internally cringing at the use of her full name. She hadn't heard it in so long that it sounded almost foreign.
"I missed you too, Kennedy." AJ said with a laugh, stepping forward to hug her cousin. She wondered briefly what the hell she was doing at her house when she lived in Atlanta, a long ways from New York. She definitely wasn't just taking a stroll in the neighborhood. "What are you doing here?"
Kennedy pulls away from AJ abruptly and looks at her as if she'd lost her mind. Which in a way, she kinda did.
"Don't tell me you forgot I was coming?" AJ stays silent. "Your memory keeps getting worse and worse, I swear you'll be 30 with Alzheimer's. Your parents bought me a ticket for a flight here to keep you company for the weekend while they're on their cruise."
