Chapter Forty Nine - No Rules
- Madeline's POV -
"Martin!" his name leaves my mouth before I could ever think twice about stopping it. I don't know if he heard me or not, but he doesn't turn around, he just keeps on walking, very angrily away from me.
My eyes leave his body and travel over to where I see Haley, sitting at the picnic table, a smug look residing on her face. My mouth parts open slightly and I feel myself starting to infuriate. My feet begin to practically stomp over towards her, her eyes giving me a monotonous look.
"What the fuck is wrong with you?!" I yell once I get over to her. She scoffs underneath her breath, before her eyes give me curious look.
"Are you going to get mad at me for this?" she says rhetorically, "I'm not the one with a jealously problem," she rolls her eyes bitchily and I narrow my eyes at her.
"You knew," I spit back, "You set this this up didn't you?!" I feel my face turning a pinkish-red color from my anger, my hands gathering in fists, trying to calm myself.
"I'm trying to help you Mads," she says in a calm voice, which only pisses me off even further. I let out a loud sarcastic laugh, rolling my eyes in the process.
"What? Trying to help ruin mine and Martin's relationship?!" I spat towards her, my chest going up and down heavily.
"Mads," suddenly she stands up from her seat, her tone frustrating, "Whatever, you guys 'have', it's a joke! This is Martin we're talking about!" she says, now getting just as angry as me.
"We obviously don't know the same Martin, but you need to butt out of my life!" I tell her sternly, telling myself to calm down, knowing that yelling doesn't solve anything.
"Look, Mads, he's not who you think he is," she shakes her head, her voice coming down to normal. "He's done things.. that are... horrible," she exhales heavily and I furrow my eyebrows at her, confused.
"What are these horrible things? You tell me all this shit, but you're not giving any evidence of him being a bad person," I retort quickly, hoping Martin went somewhere I could find him easily.
"It's not my job to tell you! You say he cares about you?" she says questionably, "If he cared about you, he would tell you everything and he sure as hell wouldn't have just walked away then," her jaw clenches with her words and I'm shut down to nothing.
I stare at her with a blank expression, unsure of what to say. I tell myself that all of the time and I've dealt with it. But hearing that from someone else? That broke the straw. I hate to admit it but he would tell me if he cared...
"Why did you get Matthew involved in this?" I try my best to ignore her words and she looks at me curiously, as if she is wondering why I changed the subject.
