Merryn's POV

Sliding my brown beanie over my colourful hair is hard. I have to make sure that all my hair is pinned up tight, and that I have enough extra hairspray in my bag in case something happens. I can't let anyone know about my rainbow head. My biggest fear is someone finding out.

"Merryn, are you up and ready?" I hear Ms Jackie call.

"Yes Ms Jackie, I'll be down in a minute!" I shout back, double checking for my things.

"Okay," I hear.

Rummaging around I find my phone and an extra packet of hair grips. I quickly pop them in my school bag and head downstairs and into the kitchen. By the time I get there everyone is already up and dressed for school. Being the eldest here is hard. Sometimes a few of the girls will ask me to do their hair, and some of the boys will ask me how they look. Half the time a laugh about it because them boys are only six or something. Too young to be obsessing over their looks.

I take a seat over at the head of the dining table, and grab a slice of toast from the rack. Quickly spreading jam on it, I shove it into my mouth and look up at the clock on the cream wall.

7:45am.

Ah, shit.

I'm late.

Again.

I have fifteen minutes to get to school before I get a late slip, meaning a detention.

I'm sorry but I really need all your opinions on this. At my school you have to be there before the first warning bell, which is at 8:00am. If you're one minute late then you get an hour long detention. The first twenty minutes of the detention are during break and the rest of it is after school. I'm sorry again, but how is that fair?

Wasting no time at all, I jump up and take all my belongings with me. I say a little goodbye to Ms Jackie and run out the door and slow down my pace as I reach the end of the road. The school isn't that far from the orphanage, thank God, but when you miss the bus it is a little bit of a trek.

And I've missed the bus.

Sighing, I start my journey towards hell, thinking about how bad my day will be.

~*~

I get to school just in time as the bell rings. Smiling slightly, I pace over to my locker and only just realize that I could have skated here. How the fuck did I forget that I have about twenty penny boards at the orphanage?

For fuck sake.

Sighing once again, I grab out my books for first and second period, shutting the metal locker and sprinting to my mentor. These are my first thirty minutes of torture because I have to sit in front of Luke.

Yes, Luke.

It sucks balls. I swear.

Reaching the room of doom, I walk in along with everyone else, avoiding all gazes. Taking a seat, I notice that Luke hasn't arrived yet. Typical, but good. Sighing, I get out my notebook and pencil case just when the teacher, Mr Philips, comes in. I love Mr Philips, he's my favorite male teacher and literally lets anyone off with anything.

"Alright class, take a seat and we will-" Sir gets cut off by the door swinging open. Everybody looks towards the door and there stands Luke, the person who I hate most.

"Ah. Luke. Good to see that you turned up to class," Mr Philips' says sarcastically.

"Well, this is my favorite class Stephan," Luke states, using Sir's first name.
