"What? Mom, no," I protest.
"Violet! It's the only way that you two can stay together," my mother counters. I'm fighting tears, while Lilly looks between the two of us.
"Don't make me tell her," I plea. "Please, mom. I'm begging you." She gives me a look of apology. Lilly's staring at me now.
"Tell me what," she asks. She watches me as my eyes fill up with tears. She then places her hand over mine. "You can tell me."
"There's something that I've been keeping from you," I say. She doesn't look surprise, and when I don't get a response, I continue. "I'm...infected. I'm an immortal." Her eyes widen, and instantly waves of regret hit me. The tears spill over and I'm choking on sobs. "I'm sorry."
"I should be so mad at you right now," She says, her voice quivering. "I should be shouting at you, screaming. I should be asking you why you didn't tell me such a thing when you promised to tell me everything. I should be repulsed by you." My sobs grow louder and I can't bare to look her in the eye. After a while, she sighs. "But I'm not. I'm not mad at you, because I know how you feel." I stop and gape at her, and she looks away immediately.
"You do," I question. She nods, then motions me to look away. She can't stomach it when she sees me cry. "Sorry."
"I do know, because I've been keeping something from you, too," She informs me. "I'm a vampire."
"You have to bite her now. I know you're a vampire and everything, but that still won't stop them from separating you two. It doesn't matter that you're a vampire. She is the most dangerous of them all, because she's a born immortal. An original. Or should I say the original," my mom explains.
"What does that mean," I ask her.
"It means they can't kill you. Ever," Mom enlightens me. "No matter what they do, you will live on forever. And that's what puts you and her into two different categories. Though you both are immortal, she can be killed. You cannot. But if you bite her, then you both will be sanctioned together," She explains. I don't waste any time in grabbing her arm and sinking my teeth into wrist. She gasps in pain, and I mentally apologize before biting harder, so hard that blood slowly fills my mouth. I withdraw.
"Sorry. It has to be done like that otherwise it wouldn't have worked," I say. Then it hits me. "Mom? Where are we going?" When she doesn't respond, I know my suspicions are confirmed. "Why, mom? Why did you give up my secret?! You promised you wouldn't do that."
"It's the only way I know you'll be safe," She cries. "Trust me, if there were anything else I could do to protect you, I would. But there isn't."
"Wait. I thought you were protecting me from these people," I inquire. She shakes her head.
"Trust me sweetheart," she says. "The...things that are after you are far worse than them. I'd rather you fall into the hands of those scientists a thousand times over being captured by those beasts that have been after you." The car suddenly stops and I go forward, my head nearly colliding with the headrest of the passengers seat. "We're here." Lilly and I get out of the car and I immediately go to her window. She rolls it down and pulls me into a hug. "Be safe, my baby. I'll always love you. Always." Her voice shakes as she inhales. I hug her back, burying my face in her shoulder. The hug is cut short. "Go."
"Mom," I say.
"We will see each other again someday," She promises. She puts the car in reverse and speeds away from the compound. I watch the car until the taillights are no longer visible. Lilly places a hand on my should and I know what she means.
"Yeah, you're right," I say. "Its time." I turn and stare at the castle-like fortress in which contain all the infected of the state. Though it's still meant to confine the so called beasts of this world, it's still beautiful.
"What do you think is inside," Lilly questions me. I shrug.
"I guess we'll find out," I answer. The gate opens and armed men pour out, guns aimed at us. I figure since they already know, there's no need to hide what I can do. In the blink of an eye I'm holding the barrel of a gun belonging to get guy in the middle. "We came here willingly. No need to bring weapons. I suggest you put those down." I smile politely. The guys hands are trembling as he stares at me.
"Sorry miss. But this is how we have to do this," the guy apologizes after clearing his throat.
"Change it. It makes me feel a bit...uneasy when there's a gun aimed at me. Lilly, come," I say. She's now at my side, using her speed to her advantage. One by one, the guards lower their weapons. "Good. Lead the way."
