I wiped my eyes one last time in a final attempt to look composed walking in the station. Keeping my eyes on the ground I pulled the door open and walked in. I was directed by the officer to sit down so I did. I swear, you would think that chairs in a police station would be more more comfortable.
I was approached by a lady in her mid-thirties. She had a warm smile and bright eyes.
"Hi, Honey. My name is Melody. You must be Lacey."
"Yah," I said quietly, barley above a whisper. I didn't feel like talking to anyone.
"Well, I'm your case worker. I'm here to help make this news and what we do from here as easy and painless as possible." She informed me with the same warm smile that was almost comforting.
"When can I see my mom?" That was all I cared about at this point. I had to know if she was okay. I can't lose my mom.
"Soon, Sweetie. I have to ask you a few questions first." She said in a smooth tone.
"I'm not doing anything until I get to see my mom." I said crossing my arms over my chest.
"I know this is hard to deal with but in order to help you mom you need to cooperate." her soothing tone was slowly leaving her voice. She didn't want to be dealing with a bratty teenager at four in the morning.
"I want to see her. I have to see that she is okay. After that I will answer any questions you have but I need to see her." There was no way I was gonna give up that easy.
"I'll see what I can do but I can't make any promises." With that she turned around and walked over to an officer. She began talking to him and gestured back to where I was sitting. I could tell she was not happy about me not answering her questions right away. I didn't care at all though. I needed to see my mom. The officer turn and pulled out a phone, while Melody turned and walked back to me. She let out a small sigh and began to speak.
"Well, Officer Smith is calling the hospital now to see if you can see your mom. Can you answer a few questions while we wait?" She was almost whining now. She wanted to be done with this almost as much as I did.
"Yes, but as soon as I can I want to see her." I sat down and crossed my legs, waiting for her questions.
"Okay, so how long has your mom been drinking?" She asked, sitting across from me.
"She hasn't been drinking very much lately, shes going to AA meetings and everything. Tonight was just a relapse. She really wants to get better." I had to say whatever it took to keep my mom around. I didn't care if I had to lie. She would get better after this. I knew she would.
"Okay, so what do you think caused this?" Melody didn't seem convinced.
"Well, I'm not sure to be perfectly honest. She was doing really good." I looked at the ground. The truth of the matter was that I didn't know what was going on with my mom. I wasn't sure how long she had been feeling like this or what the cause was. It scared me.
The officer that was calling the hospital walked over then. The hospital that my mom was at approved me going to see her. I stood up quickly and started to the door with Melody and the officer close behind. I was gonna figure out what was going on if it killed me.
