“today’s breaking news; America has declared nuclear war on Russia and the United Kingdom is said to also be affected. Not much can be told for certain at the moment but this may be Hiroshima on a world wide scale. So call your friends, say those 3 words to a loved one and stay at your home, this is the end of the world. BBC news signing off.” The day Thursday, the year 2015 the time 3.45pm. Ha no one ever even predicted this would be the day the world ended and here I am sat on my own with my earphones in watching Adventure Time. Well if the world is going to end I’m going to do the things I enjoy. Lewis should be home soon if the whole of Cheshire isn’t going crazy getting supplies to last them a month- that’s if they don’t die from radiation poisoning. I stepped out onto my balcony admiring the peaceful sight of a park below. A young girl with long black hair and sickly white skin was sat on the swing without a care in the world. “When your that young you have no idea. The world could be ending and all you can think about is high you can swing. Hmm I wish it was that easy kid, I really do.”
The door slammed shut and the air filled with worry and fear. Lewis was home. I walked in from the balcony into the thick sickening air which grabbed at my throat forcing me to cough. The look on his face told me everything I needed to know. “so I guess they have the news channel at ‘the batcave’ then, haha…”
“this is no time for jokes Jade, the world is ending and your still in your pyjamas. What did you even do today!” This was true, I was still in my pink shorts and ruffled vest top that had shrunk in the wash so when I wore it my belly button showed in the gap between my top and my shorts. My hair was less than impressive, a faded blue and purple mess tucked behind my ears. But suggesting I did nothing today was a complete lie. I had done a lot today actually, such as watch the latest Adventure Time episode as well as grown up stuff such as pay for bills and transfer money.
“Erm… the world is ending today baby I was wondering how you feel about that? I’m thinking you’re mad but I can’t really tell… maybe I should get changed and we’ll go shopping ok?” My sarcastic comment was met by a scolding look followed by a tight hug around the waist in which I automatically responded with tucking my arms around his shoulders. “what’s up? The world is ending and I’m still in my pyjamas and your unusually flustered. We have each other we can get through this…. I hope we can get through this…” He tightened his grip around my waist moving his arms up my back and into my hair twisting a strand round his finger and releasing it. His other hand then relaxed around my waist and moved around to my hips where he pulled away and placed a light kiss of my forehead.
“My work has offered a place in an underground bunker 101 and I think we should go, yanoo just to be on the safe side? I love you Jade and I want as much time as possible with you. I’ll help you pack I already have my stuff ready I packed last night before I left.”
“so that’s why there are suitcases everywhere and why you emptied our bank account…. How did you know this before the news….”
“I told you not to ask questions about my work, now are you in or not?”
I would never leave his side so the answer would of course of been a yes. I walked into the bedroom to find half of my stuff already packed into suitcases and duffle bags. It’s a wonder I never saw this in the morning, then again my priority wasn’t getting dressed and tidying first thing this morning. I found my favourite red shorts and managed to pull on a white vest top while Lewis packed the food and tins in the kitchen into the last duffle bag we had. I slipped on my white converses and grabbed the duffle bags next to me and followed him out of the house. “Oh I forgot Luna! Lewis can we take pets?” I did not look forward to the news that I guessed before I asked the question.
“Jade I’m sorry….. I tried” I know I told him as we closed the door to a meowing cat as a tear rolled down my eye. I had to be strong for Lewis and myself if I broke now we wouldn’t survive 2 minutes when the explosions hit. We ran down the stairs of the apartment building and out into chaos. Abandoned cars littered the roads and children crying as their mothers forced them to follow behind them. Everyone gathered by the top of the hill where most of Cheshire could be seen below. The sight to follow will haunt me for the rest of my life. A cloud the shape of a mushroom rose from the horizon followed by a bright green flash as wind rushed past us. “we don’t have long. Jade let’s go…. COME ON!” Lewis grabbed my hand and we ran as fast as we could to the park and into a clearing where a helicopter was waiting for us. “hop on and wait here I forgot something I’ll be 2 minutes, Kyle if I’m not back in 2 minutes go without me…”
“WHAT NO! Lewis where are you going! You can’t leave!”
“2 minutes.”
