It’s warm, very warm. I can sense the warm blood flowing of the arms that were holding me up. I snuggled in tighter to the warm body of heat. It was the dead of night and all I could hear was the heartbeat of the body holding me and the sound of crickets. In the far distance I could still hear explosions but they sounded muted like beats of a song coming from a car radio as it travelled down the road. I looked up from the darkness of the gap my head had been in between his shoulders and neck and looked out at a beautiful countryside and glow bugs glistening in the bushes. “Good morning beautiful.” A gentle voice whispered to me. I looked up to see my boys face, his icy blue eyes shining down at me and his half smile melting my fear. “Were in America baby, I would have hoped to take you here one day but since the world is ending I guess this is the next best thing. You slept through a whole plane journey it was really cute actually.” He said with an adorable smile on his face.
“you watched me sleep?” I was surprised that he stayed awake the whole time to watch over me, he really was perfect. I felt so safe in his arms as he carried me over the countryside towards what looked like a gas station. A quirky little old fashioned petrol station with the old fuel pumps that manually had to be pumped. It looked deserted and the windows had been smashed and half the pumps were missing or broken. It looked like something out of a film and as we got closer Lewis lowered me to the ground to walk as we stepped onto the campus. We investigated the mini shop that had an old broken flashing neon sign that said GAS.
“This is mental.” I heard Evan say as he rammed the door to the shop down. We were all slightly dazed by the silence of the place and how it felt like a ghost town.
“Jade take a seat here. Take my jacket to sit on so you don’t get cold. Me and Evan will check for supplies, Kyle’s trying to get a signal round the back so if you see anything wrong give me a shout.”
“why can’t I come in with you? I want to see what’s inside the shop?”
“no. I don’t want you getting hurt. You can be our look out anyway, that’s an important job.”
I moaned at what he had to say but I agreed with him. Someone had to look out and if there was anything bad in there or anything heavy I would have been no help what so ever. So I adjusted to the fact that I was a spare part in all this and slumped down on Lewis’ jacket. I looked out onto the horizon to see flashing lights and chaos from what looked like a city. The countryside was defiantly more peaceful and safer. It would be great if we could just live here away from all the fear and pain. Put I’m guessing even if we don’t get killed by the explosions the exposure to radioactive material would kill us in days.
Kyle ran out from behind the corner shouting for Lewis and Evan. They poked their heads round from the door of the shop and quickly followed Kyle round the back of the shop. I followed shortly behind. “I got something just before I sounded like Rian!”
“What did he say?”
“I couldn’t make out the exact words but I think he said he was close and he defiantly said he saw our plane. I also said he missed you Lewis.”
“Haha typical! We should go out to the front and wait for him, if you can Kyle radio him and tell him were at the gas station.”
Lewis walked up to me and grabbed my head planting a kiss firmly on my head. He then moved his mouth to my ear and said, “I can’t wait until were alone then I can hold you and kiss you.” The words sent shivers down my spine. It felt like years ago since we had been alone in that house together living our lives without a care in the world. My heart skipped a beat thinking about what we used to do and what we would do once we were alone. It made me smile. My thoughts were broken by a loud meowing. I hadn’t noticed Luna had been following us the whole time, then again I had only woken up half an hour ago. I lifted her up and buried my face in her soft fur. I made my sneeze but I didn’t care, I would be lost without her and Lewis. We walked round to the front of the shop to hear heavy drums and a loud bass line. They were playing Limp Biskits Rollin’ and I immediately joined in with the chorus. Then a guy dressed in leathers and had long messy glam rock hair. It looked like Rian but a lot older than I remembered. Though being around a group of fresh faced men it felt like a relief to see someone with hair as messy as mine. Luna jumped out of my hands just as Rian approached me and opened his arms for a friendly hug. I was happy to respond and returned the hug giving him the message of ‘long time and no see’. It felt like high school all over again it was great. Behind him was a navy blue riot van that was obviously to take us from here to somewhere else.
