"Why don't you call over one of your friends for the night?" Nana offered a idea. "It's a long weekend, you might as well get someone to come over and spend it with you while I work the night shift at the hospital." I didn't get why it was only the second week of school, yet the teachers were having a inservice already! Maybe I shouldn't complain, I got to sleep in a extra day which to a teenager is heaven on earth.
"Christine is at church with her father and Alex is a dude," I told her, shoving a handful of popcorn into my mouth.
"Why don't you volunteer at the hospital tonight?" Nana grinned.
"No offense Nana, but I only like hospitals when I get to visit my daddy. Otherwise they make me depressed and think about Kay and Harry," I opened my phone and responded to a text Alex sent me.
"I understand, just don't get into any trouble, okay? It's the first time I left you at night in this house," Nana caressed the top of my head, then kissed it and walked out of the house.
"Is it safe to come out now?" Alex poked his head out of the coat closet.
I peeked out the window and watched as Nana's car lights disappeared into the darkness. "Yes, it's safe," I chuckled. "How long have you been in the closet?"
"Long enough to know you have horrible sense in style when it comes to shoes!" He sat down by me, grabbing a handful of my popcorn.
"Hey!!" I snapped, slapping his hand and watching as the popcorn go smashed onto the carpet. "You're cleaning that up!" I demanded.
"No, your mess my honey!" He crossed his arms.
"Please?" I pouted.
"Nope!" He stood his ground.
"Fine then," I got down onto the floor and picked up the pieces of popcorn. He kicked me and I landed onto my side, crunching a bunch of popcorn pieces with my weight. "This means war!" I grabbed a bunch of popcorn in my hand and chucked it at Alex's face, one actually landing in his mouth.
"Oh, it's on!" He stretched his arm over and dropped a handful of popcorn down the back of my shirt. I shivered, and shook the popcorn out the back.
I got up and ran the the kitchen, grabbed a spray can of whipped cream that Nana rarely uses on anything. I bolted back to the living room and sprayed Alex down with the whip cream. He jumped up as I ran out and hugged me, suddenly I was the one full of foamy white stuff.
He pulled out a bottle of pop out from his pocket, he had brought his own since my Nana doesn't buy any because it's a "health hazard". I knew what was coming. Alex poured it over my head and I was soaked in brown liquid.
"Alex! My hair!" I screamed.
"Oh my gosh, I keep forgetting you're a girl who likes to look nice!" He attempted to rub the pop off my face, but it just smudged it more. "I'm really sorry Jenna, I got carried away."
"You clean this up, now!" I demanded. "I'm going for a shower." I walked up the hall and grabbed a towel.
I went into the bathroom, quickly undressed from my food-covered clothing and jumped into the shower. I didn't know how long I was in the shower, and personally didn't care. Gave Alex more time to clean and me more time to get some energy to help... If he didn't have it all done already which would be a miracle in my eyes. I finished my shower and got out, drying my self and my damp, instantly curly hair. I wrapped the towel around me, threw my clothes into the corner and walked out of the bathroom.
"You have a pretty voice!" Alex stood outside my door. I jumped back, grabbing my towel to make sure I wouldn't drop it in front of him. The only thing standing in the middle of my naked body and him was the towel, it needed to be protected. "Did I scare you?"
"No I jumped for glee that you were listening to me in the shower!" I snapped. "I wasn't singing... Was I?" Oh crap, I just realized I was.
"You were, and you're voice sounds beautiful! Why didn't you tell me you could sing?" He raised a eyebrow.
"Because I can't," I turned off the bathroom light.
"You can, I just heard you!" Alex sounded like he was telling the truth.
"Kay was the singer of the family, she was the one with the talent. Not me!" It was true. Kay had so many musical awards from her entries in singing competitions and school activities. Everyone loved to hear her sing, she has inherited from Tanya. I can't sing because it would make me seem like that thing, and I didn't want to seem like her, at all, ever.
"Lies, and you know it!" Alex pointed a finer at me.
"Okay. Fine, I can sing a little bit. Just a little bit," I told him. I didn't think I was talented at all to be honest, Tanya always said I wouldn't amount to anything. Maybe I believed it, because she said it so often when I was in her care.
"Jenna, you're fantastic. Maybe you could sing the anthem at our next game, I will leave you alone about it, I promise you!" Alex offered.
"Alex..." I began.
"Not taking no for an answer," he smiled. "Now let's go eat popcorn sensibly."
"Alex let me get dressed first!!" He looked down at the towel, did he not notice I was still in it. His cheeks became a blood red and he walked down the hall to the living room.
I rolled my eyes and walked into my bedroom to get dressed.
