I sat next to Kathleen as she slept in her bed, Jean had gone home due to her parents order hours ago and no one else knew Kathleen was in the hospital. I folded my legs, I didn't even change out of my outfit from this morning and I felt gross, but it was for Kathleen so I didn't care. She slept so silently, all I could hear was the clinging of her heartbeat on the monitor. I didn't want to leave her, not yet so I would remain here at three in the morning.
Alex called a few times according to Nana when she got home. She said there was a bunch of messages from him, and that I should call him. I told Jean to call him for me to explain I didn't have my phone or any way to contact him. I was too preoccupied with making sure I was at Kathleen's side just in case she was to pass away during her slumber.
Nana walked in, holding a bag of plain chips. "Go home, Jenna!" She screamed.
"Nana? What even!" I quietly said.
"You're just like your mother. So freakin' stubborn!" She snapped. Why was she doing this for Kathleen to hear? I stood up in frustration.
"Excuse me?" I screamed at her. "I'm nothing like that little idiot you raised!" Why was I suddenly snapping?
"I did not raise a idiot. Or maybe I did because she had you!" What even caused this fight? "You got drunk like her. You probably had sex like her. I trusted you and you see where your friend ended up?" She pointed to Kathleen.
"Listen here lady, I did not get drunk. I didn't want to forget my seventeenth birthday! Are you a stupid loony?" I was really getting ready to roar.
"You're a liar, did the abuse even happen? I saw the blood work of this blonde bimbo, Jenna. I know you guys were drinking!" She didn't call me a liar, did she? She saw the proof for herself.
"This is what it's about, isn't it? You don't want me to end up like that blonde bimbo that you raised! I didn't drink and I sure didn't have sex!" I burst. "You just want to save yourself and not make the same mistake twice, don't you?"
Nana slapped me, right across my exposed face. I left my face tilted towards the way she directed her slap for a while, trying to comprehend what just happened. I moved quickly and grabbed my shoes to put them on. She grabbed my chin and held my face up in the direction she was standing.
"I'm not done talking!" She barked.
"But I'm done listening," I put on my left shoe and bolted out the door.
I was in the rain suddenly with only a tank top and short shorts on, freezing more than I did in the winter but yet this was only fall weather. I can't believe my Nana ever compare me to Tanya. We were two different people, were we not?
I made my way to Alex's door and stood knocking for a while. His parents weren't home, they brought Mae on a quick trip to Disney for the weekend. I pounded until the door opened and I suddenly was pounding on Alex's bare chest. He had abs? And I never was notified? Well that's not a shocker since he's a hockey player and all.
"Jenna?" He said, rubbing sleep from his eyes. "Is that you?"
"I'm cold, could you please let me in?" I cried. He brought his arm out and hauled me in.
"Oh my, you are freezing and soaked!" Alex examined me. "Go up to my room, I'll get you some of my clothes."
I did as instructed and walked up to him room. "I was thinking about it Alex, if you're up for it we can do something that'd keep us both warm," I grinned for the first time all day.
"Like what?" Was he really being this stupid.
I stood on my tip-toes and kissed him unlike I ever kissed him before. "It involves something we both have to chip in on," I tugged at back a little.
"Oh, I get it," He kissed me slowly and before I knew it I was shirtless.
