~Chapter 48: What's Your Name?

            Maura smiled at me. “I’m so glad he chose you.” I hugged Maura, speechless.

            “The boys and I have a meeting today,” Niall told me in the morning the next day.

            “When?”

          “In about an hour. It will last until dinner, babe.” He walked over to me and kissed my forehead. “I love you.”

            I smiled and kissed him. “I love you too.”

            Niall stood up from the dining room table and walked to the front door. “Text me for anything!” he said, leaving.

            I cleaned up and decided to go for a walk. I remembered that man at the police station. Where have I seen him before? I asked myself. My record was not there, and I intended to try to find out some stuff without Niall around.

~~~~
            I made my way to the police station once again. I stood outside the door, pretending to be on my phone. I listened for the man’s gruff voice. “She was here,” I heard the man say in a low voice, but not low enough.
            “How do you know it was her?” I heard another voice ask. This man’s voice was softer and younger-sounding.
            “She said her name.” I could tell the older man was a man of few words.
            “You don’t even remember what she looks like. How old was she when you left?”
            “When WE left, boy.” The man spit out the last word. “Five months.”
            “She grew up without you. Look how she is now.” Then followed a long period of silence. I stood still until I realised they were watching me. I turned my attention to them.
            “You’re back,” the older man grumbled.
            I studied the younger man. He was a little taller than Niall, so I was up to his neck. His eyes were bright blue, like the older man, and his blonde hair was neatly sweeped to the right side of his head. A little bit of his side bangs fell in his eyes. Overall, he seemed like the kind of guy that most girls my age would be attracted to. “I’m sorry, do I know you?” I asked with sass in my voice.
            “What’s your name?” the younger man asked.
            “Why do you need to know?” I replied.
            He watched me intently. “Because I know that you want to know mine. So I’m asking you first.”
            I narrowed my eyes at him. “Why don’t YOU go first, then?”
            “My, you are really sassy for a nineteen-year-old.” He stopped, catching himself.
            I arched one eyebrow. “How did you know I’m nineteen?”
            “I was guessing.” The man gazed at me with his bright blue eyes. “So what is your name?”
            “What is YOUR name?”
            “I asked first. And you know what they say. Ladies first.”
            “Well too bad.” I glared at him.
            He glared right back. I’ve never met anyone like him before, I thought. And yet, so alike. “Fine.” He stood up straight. “My name is Cornelius Damian Sheridon. And you are?”
            “Cordelia Delphina Sanders.” I looked him straight in the eyes. The older man clenched his fist. We have the same initials, I thought. How peculiar.
            “This is Officer Sheridon.” Cornelius motioned to the older man standing next to him.
            My eyes traveled to his name tag. It printed “Officer Sheridon” in bold letters. They seem like father and son. “What hours do you guys work here?” I asked.
            “Every day. From seven in the morning until seven at night,” Cornelius responded. He hesitated a little. “I’m new on the job.”
            I studied both of them. “Okay then. Goodbye.” I turned and left without saying another word.
