Chapter 21
Michaela
I’ve seen their faces before. My eyes grown even wider when I realise they are the three I am supposed to destroy. I lurch my body forwards towards them only to be yanked backwards by restrains they must had put around my wrists when I was emerged in blackness. When I realise I have no way of breaking free of the ropes in my human form I close my eyes and make my body begin to shift. But a burning sensation from my arm prevents me from doing so and I bring my knees up to my chest.
The three of them whisper among themselves and the two girls leave the room leaving just me and the boy alone in the room together. He lowers himself onto the bed in front of me and stares into my eyes. He reaches his hand towards my knee but I quickly scuttle away to the furthest point of the bed.
“Michaela?” he asks. I tilt my head to one side to try and understand what he is saying, “it’s me, Mason.” So that is one of my targets names, Mason. I repeat it over and over in my head to try and retain the word when a slightly dull pain rings through my head but eventually it subsides.
“Do you not remember me?” he asks in my direction again.
I go to shake my head when the pain returns even stronger than the last time and I let out a small whimper. I try to stay strong like Luna and Darren had trained me to but the pain is so overwhelming that I let my guard down. He edges his way towards me but I do nothing to stop hum. My gaze lifts to meet his after the pain settles just enough for me to move my head.
For a moment my dull vision shifts back to colour and all my memories come rushing back.
“Mason.” I shout before I press my lips against his. Just as I pull away he unties my wrists from the bed but as he does my coloured sight starts to fade again. The urge to wrap my hands around his throat returns again and I leap from the bed before he even realises.
His eyes widen in shock when I lunge towards him but he is quick to move out of my way. I stumble over my own feet when my vision flashes back again but I struggle to stay as myself. Several times my vision flashes back and forth until I clutch my head and drop to the ground as the buzzing pain once again begins to throb through my skull.
Mason walks over and kneels down in front of me. His eyes bore into mine as he places his hands on either side of my head. His hands instantly warm and send tingling sensations through my body. He holds me in place when I let out a gasp as I feel all my memories return to my head, my colour vision returns fully and I manage to peer down at my black hair falling over my shoulders. I lunge forwards and wrap my arms around his shoulders as he picks me up and returns the hug. I hold onto him so tightly so that I will never let him go again or lose him again. I wrap my legs around his stomach and crash my lips to his again with so much want and longing he pushes my back up against the wall.
“I’m sorry.” I breathe.
“Sorry for what?” he replies before kissing me again and placing my feet onto the floor. I wrap my arms around his stomach and hug him tightly again until the sound of a door clicking open grabs my attention. Catherine and Kate stand by the doorway before they both run towards me and crush my body to the floor in a massive bear hug.
“Thanks for that.” I say as I brush myself off and stand to my feet. I smile at them as they both look at me with questioning eyes. I look down to where their gazes land and see the numbers still imprinted on my skin, as bold as ever. My fingers trace the numbers making me shiver and remember how I lost myself so easily. I look back up at the three of them and force a half-hearted smile to form on my lips and they return the same gesture.
I look towards the windows to see the sun falling its way down the sky and I realise my eyelids have become heavy so I make my way over to the bed. Mason, Kate and Catherine whisper among themselves before Mason climbs in next to me and Catherine and Kate lie next to each other at the foot of the bed. Mason snakes his arm around my waist and my breathing matches his own before my eyelids shut and I’m engulfed in a darkness I welcome.
When I open my eyes the foggy light spills into the small room. I fist my eyes and rub away the sleep. Catherine and Kate, from the clanging I can hear from the other room, are making something that we could call breakfast.
I got to swing my legs off the bed when Mason tugs them back and rolls his body above mine.
“Where do you think you’re going?” he whispers in my ear.
“To get breakfast.” I wiggle out of his grip and quickly walk into the room where Kate and Catherine are. When I walk into the room I see Kate sitting at the table and Catherine on the counter top.
“How are you feeling?” Kate asks me between spoonfuls of cereal.
“Good thanks, a lot better.” I reply whilst picking up an apple from the counter and taking a bite from it.
A second later Mason comes into the room holding a box in his hands.
“What’s that?” I ask him.
“I’m not sure but there’s a note stuck to it.” He opens the paper and reads it out loud, “if you find these wear them and they will think you are one of them and hopefully survive. Good luck.”
Mason opens the box and pull out a white wig and a set of orange contacts. I feel my mouth gape slightly at the sight before me. But then as if on cue an idea begins to formulate in my mind.
“I know how we can rescue Hayley,” the three of them look at me to continue, “I can wear these, sneak into the headquarters and get her out of there.”
“No you can’t go, I can’t lose you again.” Mason says sternly from the other side of the room. I walk over to him and look straight into his eyes.
“Trust me, I promise you it will work and everything will be fine. Besides they’ll probably start to wonder where I am and if I go back they won’t come looking for you guys.” He nods sorely at me and hand me the box.
“You sure you want to do this?” Catherine asks me as she places he hand on my shoulder.
“I have to, I’m the reason this all started.” With that I go over to the mirror in the room and begin to change back inot one of them; cringing at the memories that come with it.
