Chapter One
Mason
I see Michaela standing there. Putting her makeup on like graffiti on the walls of the heartland. She’s a vigilante; a rebel. You don’t want to get caught up in her games. See the evil through her bright hazel eyes. This girl means business. I can tell she will not rest until what needs to be done is done. She’s going for it. And, foolishly, I’m going along with her. I’m going with a woman whose misleading and troublesome attitude has got us into this mess in the first place. But I love her. I love the way she doesn’t want to be like anyone else. She’s a fighter. Stronger heart than any other woman I have ever and will ever know. She’s got the brains to fix this and she’ll find a way to get us out of this hell hole. Time’s running out for us, but I know somehow we will get through this. She’s an experienced young lady who doesn’t take no for an answer. Whereas I’m just a kid. Although we are both sixteen, she’s more mature than me. Yet she accepts me the way I am. This girl, who doesn’t take shit from anyone, wants to be with me through this tough time. For once in my life I feel wanted.
But what does that matter at the moment? I’ve got more problems to deal with. We need to get out of here. I can sense them coming. We’re on the run. We’re stuck in hiding until it’s safe to leave. Just me, Michaela and the amulet. The same god damn amulet that got us into the mess in the first place! Until we get out of this dilapidated apartment, that’s the only thing keeping us going. But the amulet shouldn’t be here in the first place. And neither should we. “This ain’t no fairy-tale” she tells me, “this is the real deal.”
I stand there waiting for something to happen as Michaela ties up her scuffed Doc Martens. Ever since they stole our whole lives away from me and her I’ve always been on edge, waiting and wondering when and which direction their next attack will come from. We just had to listen to them didn’t we; take that stupid amulet and give it to them and now our world has been turned into a hell, literally.
