Chapter 18
Mason
I keep running till my lungs burn and my legs fail me, causing my arms to fly out to grip onto a tree for support my weight. I look over my shoulder to see that the shifter is no longer following my path in which I allow myself to sit with my back pressed up against the rough bark of the tree. The sunis still high in the sky and blind me whenever I look towards in.
Before I can think otherwise I stand to my feet and continue to walk towards the bus that I can see in the distance in front of me. The sand kicks up from my feet and hit my face. I run a hand through my hair, feeling the gritty piece in between my finger and letting them slowly fall and get picked up by the wind. I step onto the bus only for my ears to be deafened by two high pitched screams that I have to cover my ears to try and muffle the sound. Once it has died down I remove my hands from my ears, I look at the two girls that cower on the same seat, practically onto of each other.
“What the hell are you doing?” Kate’s face changes to a calmer expression when she rolls her eyes whilst Catherin shouts at me.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t think I looked like a mass murderer coming to kill you or anything, but come on we’ve got to get back to Michaela, please.”
They both hesitate for a moment before Catherine grabs her bag and they both follow me back out to the hot, death land.
“Here,” I throw a bottle of water and bag of crisps to them each as their mouths drop slightly. I smirk at their reactions, knowing they now regretted not coming with us as I place my bag back on my shoulder.
“But…where?” Catherine trips over her own tongue as she stares down at the objects in her hands as if they are just projections of her imagination.
“We found them in an apartment. But don’t worry we’ve already had some of it so it’s fine.” I don’t even get to finish my sentence before both girls are opening the packages and follow me as we start to walk.
Time goes on and we walk further away from the bus and nearer to Michaela. The sun makes it way down the sky which only urges my legs to move faster and to get to Michaela quicker.
When we eventually get to the alleyway I immediately run towards the place where I left Michaela. Only to be greeted bu an empty space. I blink my eyes at first to make sure I’m not just imagining this, be she really is gone.
“What the hell.” I turn to face Kate and Catherine puffing and trying to catch their breath. “Where is she?”
“How are we supposed to know?” Kate exclaims in between breaths. The I look to Catherine as she walks over to the concrete wall that has a small piece of card taped to it. My heart hammers against my chest, feeling as if it is going to break through and leave me, that would be two things I’ve lost that I can’t live without. As Catherine reads the writing on the piece of card her raised eyebrows drop and her expression becomes a cross between shocked and almost disgusted.
“They have her.”
Those three words have been ringing through my head ever since Catherine said them out loud. I took both of them to the apartment because we needed somewhere to stay for the night and somewhere to think.
“Well where did they take her?” I almost scream at Catherine.
“I don’t know, how am I supposed to know?” she screams back at me.
“I don’t know.” I drop into the bed and cover my face with my hands as I lay back onto the bed Michaela and I sat on earlier.
“Hey, Mason.”
“Yeah.” I reply to Kate who gazes out the window next to the bed that I’m lying on.
“When you were here earlier did you notice that building?”
I spring up and stand next to her and lead my gaze to where her finger is pointing.
The building in the distance is surrounded by a high wire fence. It has barbed wire surrounding it also and spot lights circling the perimeter. The building itself is massive and has an army but futuristic style to it.
“That must be where she is.” I turn to face Kate who now has her back to the window and her arms crossed over her chest.
“Yup, you got a plan to go and get her?” Kate raises her eyebrows at me.
“No, but something makes me think you do. Can we hear it?”
With that we all sit on the floor facing each other as Kate begins to explain to us how we are going to get Michaela back.
“Right, so we can sneak through the gap in to fence that I saw there. Then we can climb through the air vent system till we find where they are keeping Michaela. Mason can get her while we keep guard and then we run back here.”
The plan doesn’t sound that complicated or difficult, but it will work. We decide to take it easy for the rest of evening. We find more food and discover that the shower works.
When I lay down to go to sleep all I can think of is Michaela and how I shouldn’t have left her there. I was stupid. But it doesn’t take long for my mind to settle as I listen to Catherin and Kate’s breathing from the bed that I insisted they shared as I look up at the ceiling and finally close my eyes.
