Chapter Thirteen
Mason
We keep running through the forest, so fast that my feet move effortlessly across the floor. Hayley’s breath tickles the back of my neck as she remains on my back. Catherine leads us past giant trees and pushes back branches to make a path for us. A few moments later we find our way back to the opening we were sitting in earlier. We run across it as fast as we can, hoping that none of them will spot us in the open.
When we reach the other side I scam the area for a place to hide, anywhere. But when I look around the small town that once stood here now forms what looks like a war field. Yet there are no bodies just piles of rubble swapped for the small houses and shops.
“What the hell.” Catherine blurts out when she comes to a stop in front of a fallen brick wall. Michaela and Kate come to a halt a little while after us and look around just as we did with their mouths slightly open.
“Where do we go now?” Michaela says.
“I guess we keep going, but I’m sure we can slow it down a bit.” I reply. With that we continue walking past the many piles of rubble. There’s a sign broken in half that says something about a 50% sale in one of the shops.
We finally come across a house that is still sort of standing, well without a roof anyway. We all walk through the doorway into one of the rooms. It is filled with soft furnishings and photo frames containing pictures of happy, smiling people. Our footsteps are muffled by the fluffy carpet and thin layer of dust that covers almost everything. We decide to sit down in the room for a while and wait for Hayley to wake up.
“So what do we do now? We can’t keep running” Catherine asks. I shrug my shoulders in response before saying.
“I guess we will have to wait for Hayley to wake up since she has some idea of what’s going on.”
The three of them nod and the room falls into silence. After a few minutes or sitting and waiting Michaela comes and sits next to me. She paces her hand on my knee and I place mine on top of hers. I look into her eyes half expecting them to appear sad and worried but instead they contain a new spring of life to them. They look excited like a child on Christmas morning but her face fails to appear the same. Her eyes gesture over towards the exit before she leads me over towards it. Michaela tells Catherine and Kate, who are now looking at us,
“We will be back in a minute.”
She leads me through what must have been the kitchen and leans up against the wall next to the marble counter. I walk over to her and stand in front of her.
“What do we do now?” she asks me whilst taking my hands in hers. “We barely have a clue about what is going on and the only person who has the knowledge about all off this is out cold.”
“Of course I know that Michaela and I don’t know what we are going to do until she wakes up, she’s our only hope of getting out of this.”
She bites her lip and looks at the floor.
“I’m sorry, did I sound mean or something, I didn’t mean it if it did.”
She lifts her gaze back up to meet mine.
“Did you mean it?”
I look back at her puzzled, “did I mean what?”
“When you kissed me”
Right, how do I answer that? Yes I did mean it but I don’t want to ruin our friendship.
“Well aren’t you going to say anything to me?”
So I nodded and with that she leans into me. Our lips connect and move in time with each other. Her arms loop round my neck and mine hold her round her waist instinctively. She pulls me closer to herself and pulls away for the slightest moment to say,
“I love you.” Which I reply with,
“I love you too.” before leaning in again to continue with where we left off. Her hands run through my hair when we both jump at the sound of something smashing in the room where the others are.
Without any word exchanged we both run back to the room. I smile at first because I see that Hayley is awake and standing near Kate and Catherine. But it soon disappears when I see what probably made the noise we heard. Two panthers stand before the five of us. Glass is shattered around their feet from, as far as I can tell, when they entered the room through the small windows. I can guess who these two are before they turn into their human forms. Michaela and I slot in between Catherine and Kate so we are standing in a line just behind Hayley. She holds her notebook behind her back; I didn’t even realised she still had it. She jabs it in my direction discreetly as possible before Darren and Luna close the gap between us.
“Well look who we have here, the little kids who thought they could out smart us.”
“Why won’t you just leave us alone?” Hayley replies to Darren.
Darren slides his tongue across the front of his teeth and Hayley shudders. He edges closer to Hayley and mumbles something inaudible to me as it was just meant for her ears and yet Luna smile when he leans away. His eyebrows arch up and present a questioning look towards Hayley. With that Hayley darts around and with an ear piercing shout yells at us.
“Run!”
At first we hesitate, well I do at least until Michaela yanks at my arm and manages to pull me out of the front door. We run past the piles of rubble, occasionally tripping over the odd brick but eventually find our feet again.
It’s me who now drags Michaela behind myself as she stumbles at my quick, uneven pace. I turn around to make sure the others aren’t too far behind to find someone was missing.
Our only help, the only thing left of her is the book I cradle in my arms.
Hayley is nowhere to be seen.
