Chapter 9
Mason
The next morning, after watching over Michaela for the night I go to the bathroom once Michaela has finished to change into my clothes then we both make our way downstairs. When we get to the kitchen Catherine is sitting up at the table with a bowl of cereal whilst listening to her music.
Michaela and I take the two seats opposite her and pour ourselves some cereal into two identical, white bowls. I’m just about to ask Michaela how she is feeling over all the dramas of last night when the strange looking man pushes the door wide open, “Hope you all slept well last night because me and Helen have decided to take you all on a trip.” His eyes are wide with excitement; he obviously doesn’t get out much to be excited to be going out with a bunch of teenagers. He has a rucksack on his back and the woman; we now know is called Helen, follows behind him with a smart looking handbag.
Catherine looks up from her IPod as Leo and Kate walk in, “hey guys we are going to have so much fun today, we are going on a trip,” she says sarcastically as she looks from them to the man.
“It is Catherine,” the strange looking man starts, thinking that Catherine actually meant it, “you lot need to get out more, we are going to the countryside and spend the day by the woods, a little town and a meadow it will be so much fun.”
Kate rolls her eyes at Leo but her just gestures for her to follow him into the kitchen. Even though I haven’t spoken to Hayley or in fact seen her today I know I’m going to have to tell Michaela about what I need her to do for me.
Once everyone is ready to go we all go outside and find a small mini bus waiting for us which the strange looking man must have hired for the day. I save Michaela a seat because she had forgotten to put on the necklace. The necklace Hayley so desperately needs. The necklace she asked me to get for her. A few minutes later Hayley makes her way onto the bus, her eyes covered by her bright ginger hair again. Before she can pass me I grab hold of her wrist which makes her eyes widen as if I have hurt her so I am quick to release my grip without hesitation.
She looks at me and when she does I can see a glimmer of worry in her eyes, “Don’t worry, I will try to get it today for tonight, I promise.” She nods and for the first time I see a small smile form on her lips but then is just as quick to disappear. She moves down the bus and takes a seat at the back next to the window just as Michaela steps into the bus with the necklace hanging around her neck.
She wears a dark blue hoodie with some band name on it; shorts covered in splattered paint and ripped tights alongside her doctor marten boots. She looks so casual but still so stunning and as beautiful as she always does. She slides into the seat I have saved beside me next to the window. Now that everyone is on the bus and buckled in the strange looking man and Helen begin the engine and drive out onto the road. It takes about an hour to get to this ‘so called’ destination which does literally turn out to be a field surrounded by woods.
The strange looking man steps off the bus first followed by Helen who is on her phone shouting at someone on the other end, I feel sorry for whoever it is because she really seems to be having a go at them for some reason. Catherine almost trips when she steps off the bus, probably because she is distracted by her IPod, as always she has it plugged into her ears as if it is a part of her.
Leo and Kate step off next with their hands entwined as always, moving as if they were one person they ignore the strange looking man’s attempt to direct them to the blanket he has just laid down and make their way towards the woods. When we go to walk off the bus Michaela grabs my hand and leads me towards the blanket where Catherine is lying on here back and drumming her fingers on her stomach along to the song she is listening to. Michaela sits down next to her and I sit next to Michaela.
