Chapter 12
Michaela
I start to open my eyes and look at the world. More creatures with those orange eyes surround us. But instead of them hiding in the trees they stare at us in the open. As far as I can see the trees have been blown out of the soil that they used to be in. I look back at the crowd of creatures that surround us, ranging from snake with beady eyes and glimmering fangs to massive bears that stood 10 feet high on their back legs. But every one of them I looked at had exactly the same eyes. Then I turned back to the others who I expected would still be sitting round the now extinguished fire. Except they weren’t. Kate and Leo managed to keep a hold of each other but Mason, Catherine and Hayley have been thrown out in the three different directions like me.
I begin to stand up and to my surprise I’m unharmed. Once to my feet I run towards Mason, whose chest rises and falls steadily. I let out a deep sigh, so relieved that he is still here, I don’t know what I would do without him.
Catherine starts to get up onto her feet and brushes off her knees. Gradually her, Leo and Kate make their way towards me. Mason still hasn’t woken up yet even when I shake him and raise my voice to a shout.
“What happened?” I snap my head towards Catherine’s voice.
“I don’t know, but look.” The look to where I am pointing. They see the creatures that surround us and their jaws drop slightly.
“Are they…” Kate turns to me but before she can finish I nod at the unasked question.
Mason begins to stir next to me and I let out another sigh of relief. He then surpises me and sits up quickly and grabs hold of my wrist.
“It’s alright.” I comfort him as I rub my thumb across the back of his hand. His eyes connect with mine and them they look over towards Hayley who has just sat up.
“What happened?” he asks me as I get a sense of de ja vu when I answer him in the same way as I did with Catherine earlier. Once he sees them his eyes grow wider than usual.
“Are you guys alright?” Hayley rushes over to us just as Mason gets to his feet. She looks at all of us before laying her eyes on me.
“I think so, but why did the necklace explode like that?”
“I don’t know, it wasn’t supposed to do that, yeah it was supposed to give off a little light and noise but not that much. You must be more powerful than everyone else here since you sang the song but they weren’t…” before she could continue one of the two blonde-white wolves sprints towards us and leaps at Hayley pushing her to the floor.
“What the hell do you want?” she speaks to the wolf through clenched teeth. She doesn’t scream or struggle but just looks into its eyes. Then the other wold walks up beside them and they both change into the two figures I’ve seen before. Their claws retract into their fingertips and their fur forms their matching coloured hair. The boy still pins Hayley to the ground and the girl stands at his side, arms crossed over her chest. A smile creeps up on her face in amusement. Mason goes to lunge forward to knock Darren off Hayley but before her gets anywhere near them Luna moves in front of him in the same position she was in before. She was so quick I didn’t even see her take a step before she was blocking Mason.
“Tut tut I wouldn’t do that if I were you.” I walk up beside Mason and so do the others. When Mason looks at me I can see he is angry but I shake my head softly at him as he lowers his shoulders.
“Oh we just came to say thank you for releasing them.” Darren gestures towards the circle of creatures around us.
“But you weren’t supposed to do this; you were supposed to leave me alone.” Hayley looks up at Darren who has a smirk plastered on his face.
“Well that would have been rude of us now wouldn’t of it.”
Hayley struggles under his grasp and he snarls at her in response to her actions. She whimpers from his action and immediately stops struggling.
“That’s what I thought, now that you have released the rest of us we can get down to business.”
“What do you mean? You were supposed to leave me alone now that I repaid you. You said it yourself.”
“I know darling but things change, people change and we want more. We want to take over your pretty little world of yours.” And with that Darren lifts Hayley up by the shoulders and tosses her right across to the other side of the circle. When she hits the ground she lets out a gasp. For a minute I thought she wasn’t breathing but when her chest begins to slowly rise and fall a sense of relief rushes through me. Once I turn my gaze back to Darren and Luna they are closer than before. I grab both Catherine’s and Mason’s hands so that I have something I know I can trust and real to hold onto.
“What are we going to do with you lot? Now that you know what we are planning to do I don’t think we can trust you lot, can we Luna?” he turns to his partner as she shakes her head and lets out a small devilish laugh.
“I didn’t think so,” Darren clicks his fingers and the circle begins to edge closer to us. Luna and Darren gradually move out of the circle and watch us as we stand there, clueless. Then before we know it a tiger leaps towards Catherine but doesn’t make contact. I look over to see that Leo has punched it straight in the face.
“Well what the hell are you waiting for? Run!” he shouts at us and we respond, Mason runs over to Hayley and hauls her onto his back whilst Catherine and I try to pry Kate away from the scene.
“No you can’t make me I’m not leaving him.”
“Go Kate, you can’t stay here trust me.” After Leo has spoken Kate immediately turns and runs, we follow. Mason manages to make a path through the masses of animals.
And we run.
But just before the whole scene is out of sight I turn around to see Luna standing in front of Leo, when he falls to the ground.
Not moving.
But I still run.
