Chapter 15

Michaela

As Mason storms off in front of me, his feet kick up a small cloud of dust every time they hit the floor. He keeps walking and I glance over my shoulder to make sure the bus is still is sight. I try to stop him by grabbing his shoulder.

“Leave me alone.” He shakes off my hand and continues walking.

“Come on we can’t just leave them, we have to stay together.” I try to convince him to come back whilst still chasing after him. His hands clench and unclench by his sides and his shoulders appear squarer than usual. I feel my jaw tighten at my own frustration building up inside of me.

“Stop please.”

He does.

He turns around to look at me as I plied him with my eyes.

“Why don’t you just go back? You didn’t have to follow me. You could have just stayed there and everything would have been fine.”

He closes the gap between us and clenches his fists again.

“But it wouldn’t have been fine.” I try my best not to raise my voice, worried he will get even angrier.

“Oh and why is that, ha I bet it would have been just fine because you girls could hang out and I don’t know play something stupid like truth or dare.”

“It wouldn’t be fine because…..Because you wouldn’t have been there.” I blurt it out without thinking anything of it. He raises an eyebrow at this and plasters a puzzled look onto his face. I place my hand on his shoulder whilst realising the effect my words could have had. He looks at my hand touching him and then back up to my eyes, his expression unchanged. All of a sudden he briskly brushes my hand off his shoulder and continues to walk away.

“I’m going to find something to eat, if you want to join me you’re welcome to.” He says as I let my arms hang loosely at my sides. But nevertheless I follow him, as if this action has made him even more desirable to me. I have to dodge my way past bricks and rubble to keep up with his long stride and fast pace, sometimes breaking into a slight jog to do so. He doesn’t once look behind to see if I am still following him, he just stares straight ahead of him at the ruins of the town.

As we move further on the small town grows bigger but still looking abandoned and damaged. I wonder how far we gave come but it must be quite a distance since we have been walking for a fair bit of time. Mason looks around him at the change of environment we have entered, searching for something I don’t know about. Then he stops and stands dead still in front of me whilst dropping his head to look at a pile of rubble in front of himself on the floor. I stop a few feet away from him and raise an eyebrow and cross my arms over my chest. He bends down in front of the pile of rubble and cocks his head to the side, as if he were studying something about the dust. He then stands up and turns around to face me and points at me.

At first I wonder why he is pointing at me but after a moment I realise that he is showing me something that hands from his finger. The necklace that caused all of this mess dangles in front of me. The only thing that seems to be different about it is that it is covered in a fine layer of dust from the rubble Mason found it in. he fiddles with the chain between his fingers, watching it spin in the air.

“They must have been here.” His voice snaps me out of my gaze and thoughts. I shrug my shoulders, I can’t see any other way of it possibly being here. Mason walks towards me, holding the necklace now so that the chain forms a loose circle. He unclips the clasp and fastens it around my neck before tucking a piece of hair behind my ear.

“It’s back where it belongs now.” His lips form a small smile as he looks into my eyes and takes my hands in his. I feel my cheeks warming and look at my feet as Mason lets out a hushed snigger. I look up at him and frown.

“What?” he shakes his head and his smile grows wider.

“It’s just you’re so cute when you get embarrassed.”

“I am not embarrassed.”

“Are too.”

“Are not.” I can’t help but smile from how ridiculous this sounds as my cheeks get hotter and hotter with every word that escapes my lips. He pushes his forehead to mine so our noses touch slightly and we are forced to look into each other’s eyes for what seems like forever.

But we both turn our heads towards a sound of a bird landing nearby. A raven with orange, beady eyes. We start to back up slowly as more and more birds gather on remains of building =s nearby. Mason tugs at my wrist and drags me in the direction of an apartment block building as we start to run once again.

As we do I can hear some of the birds take flight behind us. Mine and Mason’s footsteps quicken and so do the beats of the bird’s wings. Once we reach the building we climb the stairs to the tenth floor. We find an apartment and run inside. Mason is quick to slam the door behind me and locks the five locks that have been nailed onto the door. He puts his back up against it as I stand in front of him, shaking so much that I can’t concentrate on anything around myself.

Then there is a scratching and screeching at the door. It fills the room so that it is the only thing I can hear and it reminds me of that dream. It all comes rushing back and I can’t push it out of my head. I try clasping my hands over my ears to drown out the sound but that does nothing, the sound us so deafening that I can’t even hear Mason shouting at me. I hold onto my head and crouch to the floor thinking that if I can get as small as possible I will be able to disappear from here to somewhere more peaceful. But that doesn’t work either, instead I rock back and forth with my knees tucked under my chin as I claw at the floor to try and hold onto something. Slowly the noise dies down, but I don’t move a muscle. I hear footsteps walk towards me and I freeze as I feel my eyes widen. I feel the thing place a hand on my shoulder and then he wraps me in a warm embrace which I feel myself stop shaking at.

“They’re gone, ok? They won’t hurt you anymore.” His arms tighten around me as I bury my face into his t-shirt to try and steady my breathing and focus on something else. Something that could actually be real, even though everything around me is real it doesn’t seem to be. Mason kisses the top of my head and says,

“Why don’t you try and get some sleep? It’s, I think, almost seven so you might as well.”

“Are you sure? But you have to promise me that you will try to get to sleep as well, promise?”

I hold out my little finger and in response he wraps his own around mine.

“I Promise.”

After that I don’t remember when I fell asleep that night but throughout my slumber there were no dreams or nightmares just black and darkness which is probably why I didn’t wake up until the morning.
