Chapter 14 ~ Uh Oh

KC’s P.O.V.

I was cold, I was hot, the room was spinning, my head hurt, my stomach hurt; it was hell. I was restrained from sleep, but I kept my eyes closed in silent hope that sleep would come and the nightmare would chase away my pain. But, it wouldn’t come. All night, I tossed and turned, bit back my moans so that Damon didn’t worry, and steadied my breathing.

“Baby, you’re burning up,” Damon whispered at one point in the night when his hand had wandered to my shoulder. I had the covers tossed away and despite the chilly night air that snaked in from the open window I still found myself sweating bullets.

“I’ll be right back,” I murmured, escaping the bed and hurrying to the bathroom, going straight to the sink and running the cold water. I splashed my face with the chilling water, feeling instant relief. Leaning against the counter, I looked up at the mirror; I guess Damon had asked Ben to come and replace the one I had smashed. My face was bright red and glowing with sweat and my eyes were dark, lined with purple shadows. I dropped my head, rubbing my stinging eyes as I shut off the faucet.

“Sweetheart, you look awful.” My hand tightened around the handle and my eyes widened, goose bumps racing down my arms. I looked up at the mirror and standing behind me was Doyle, a wide grin on his thin, pale lips. His mismatched eyes were chilling, digging into my soul and freezing it. The scars on the left half of his face were incredibly noticeable and haunting, looking like the work of a monster. He chuckled, his eyes glowing demonically. I spun around only to find myself facing air. I leaned back against the counter and shrunk to the ground, finding it hard to catch my breath.

“Everything all right, Kace?” I looked up to find Damon leaning in the doorway, his eyes glazed with remnants of sleep. He noticed me on the floor and kneeled beside me, his hand going to my shoulder. “God, Kace, you look like you just saw a ghost.” I chuckled at the irony, but the concern on Damon’s face grew as he brushed the hair out of my face.

“I’m fine, Damon, honestly,” I lied, rubbing my face tiredly. “I’m just exhausted.”

“Kace-.” he began, his worries evident in his voice. I looked at him and hid my pain behind a comforting smile.

“Don’t worry, Damon. Brianna had just knocked the wind out of me today. But I promise you, nothing’s wrong,” I stressed, resting my palm on his cheek. He looked at me, his gaze hard. Grabbing my hand, he slowly stood and helped me to my feet, turning off the light and leading me back to our bed.

“I’m not arguing with you, Kace, you’re observing again tomorrow,” he said as soon as we had slipped into bed. I turned to him and raised a questioning eyebrow.
