Chapter 4 ~ Newfound Bloodlust

KC’s P.O.V.

Jared squirmed impatiently on my lap, his wide baby blue eyes staring around in curiosity. His small hand was reaching out towards the fire that flickered with life in front of us, his other hand grasping my index finger. Amber cradled D.J. in her arms, the tiny bundle half asleep and yawning tiny whimpers. That’s what I liked to call him; D.J. When I saw them early this morning that’s what I had said and it quickly caught on.

“How do you get him to sit still,” I murmured to Amber when Jared tried to crawl off my lap, but I had grabbed him around the chubby waist and pressed him close to me, almost like what Amber was doing.

“Oh my goodness, KC, I can’t wait to see the day when you’ll have your own squirmy baby to deal with,” she laughed as we swapped out children. She handed me sleepy D.J. and she grabbed Jared, settling him down in her lap.

“Haha, sure,” I drawled, watching the embers from the fire float towards the night sky. Me, a mother? Sounds like the punch line to a bad joke. Not to mention that Damon and I would probably have no time at all to be watching a rambunctious little pup crawling about and crying in the middle of the night. As long as the topic doesn’t jump up between Damon and I, we’ll be good childless for a while.

Speaking of the devil, I heard Dan’s and Damon’s voices behind us and glanced back to see them walking through the crowd towards us, Dan’s hands shoved into his pockets. He looked exhausted, even old, but you couldn’t have expected less. I mean, the new father of twins after five weeks of sweating about a safe delivery. Damon had a sly grin plastered to his lips as he talked to Dan who nodded in return.

“Hey, Am,” Dan said and lent down to kiss the top of her head. She smiled softly at him when he went to take D.J. from me, the baby whimpering slightly before lolling off to sleep again.

“Babe,” Damon greeted coolly, grabbing me by the hips and lifting me up. He slid into my seat before settling me onto his lap. I growled in protest, but he snaked his arms around my waist and kept me seated.

“So Amber, how’s life as a new mother?” Damon questioned, turning to her as she gazed tiredly into the flame.
