Chapter 5 ~ It’s Mutual
KC’s P.O.V.
Sporting a pair of worn, old blue jeans and a white blouse, I journeyed my way back into the cellar where the rogues rested peacefully in their cells. Apparently, our somewhat stern hospitality was more than great for them because they had gratefully accepted the clean robes and stiff beds. Except for the Alpha. He paced back and forth behind the silver bars, still in wolf form, and eyes narrowed on Ali and Taylor who were carefully watching him.
“He’s been doing that since he was locked up,” Ali informed me, however not taking her eyes off of the sulking wolf. I walked up to the bars and he stopped and sat, staring up at me with empty blue eyes. I winced; I knew that same emptiness.
“Shift,” I said, pressing the button that opened the door. He looked me up and down, almost as if sizing me up. He shifted anyway and grabbed for the robe the moment his human arms formed, carelessly tying it around himself, all the while keeping his gaze locked on me. Luckily, Damon wasn’t around to get all possessive. “Hungry?” I raised a questioning eyebrow at our guest once he secured the robe and his eyes nearly widened in surprise, but then he stiffened and hid behind a blank expression.
“What about my pack?” the Alpha asked through gritted teeth, his voice pained. I looked to Taylor and nodded, granting him permission to open the doors to the other cells. Simultaneously, the doors slid open, waking one of the members up, and two others. I looked carefully at the one who didn’t react, but simply glared at the opening door.
“Come on up,” I said, leading the little pack up the stairs, my Scouts trailing closely behind them. I walked them into the dining room and ushered for them to sit down. Four of the six sat, but the Alpha and the female who hadn’t reacted to the opening doors remained standing, the Alpha’s eyes on me and the female’s glaring at the Scouts. “I’ll be back in a moment. Please, make yourselves comfortable,” I offered, keeping my expression solid and stern, hoping they wouldn’t take my hospitality for granted. I turned and disappeared into the kitchen, meeting Dan, Carlos, Logan, and Danica at the counter.
“How are Amber and the twins?” I turned to the beta. He shrugged, but smiled.
“Shaken up, but fine,” he answered.
“Damon still in the shower?”
“When I went up there he was,” Carlos responded, forcing a pleased smile to my face. After Damon released me from his reassuring embrace, he told me not to go near the rogues without him, but how could I get any answers with him standing over me like an overprotective… an overprotective polar bear.
“Great,” I said, grabbing a couple plates of food and carrying them out to the dining room, Dan, Logan, Carlos, and Danica did the same.
“Please help yourselves,” I said, sliding into the chair at the head of the table, watching the four hungrily stuff the food into their mouths. I looked up at the Alpha who hadn’t moved and nodded for him to sit in the seat closest to me. He looked to the female before he cautiously sat, the female sitting beside her pack mates.
