Alec had left Magnus' loft early morning, taking a few laps around central park and then headed to the Institute.
Isabelle, Jace and Clary were in the kitchen. Pouring hinself a bowl of cereal, Alec sat down, across from Jace.
"Hey." Jace said, seemingly uncomfortable.
"Hey." Alec said back, his voice tight. He bit his bottom lip, pushing his cereal around.
Isabelle and Clary shared a confused look, but didn't ask anything. Jace and Alec weren't fighting, just uncomfortable.
Alec rinsed his bowl out, and padded down the hall to his room. Shutting the door, he pulled a trash bag from the closet and started putting the rubble from the bed into it.
Jace had walked in, and pulled out another bag. He silently sat beside Alec and put pieces of the bed in a bag. After cleaning everything up, Jace and Alec lugged the matress and the trash bags to the dumpster in the back of the Institute.
Heading back to Alec's room, he and Jace sat on the floor. Neither said a word.
"Alec, I'm sorry." Jace said at the same time Alec said, "Jace, I'm sorry."
They almost laughed.
"We're parabatai." Alec stated.
"We're brothers." Jace said. "This - it shouldn't have happened."
Alec nodded. "I know. I never thought it would. Any of it."
"I'd never punched you before. Until last week." Jace said.
"Me too."
Silence.
"Alec?"
"Yeah?"
"Remember what I said, about you not loving Magnus?"
"Of course I do." Alec's voice was grim.
"I was wrong. When I threw that knife at you in the kitchen, and you jumped in front of Magnus, I could see it in your face how much it scared you to see him in danger."
Silence.
"Thanks Jace."
Silence.
"Can we be brothers again? Parabatai?" Jace asked.
"Yeah."
Later that day, Alec went to Magnus' house. They laughed all night. Alec remembered what it was like without Magnus, and he took every moment like it was his last.
