Chapter Five: The Hero’s Growl And The Demon King’s Attack

Never before had he ever seen such a large amount of calm humans before. They filled the town in throngs, bustling with an understated urgency. They ignored him, continuing on with their daily business as he stared at them. It was so different than he was used to. It was a whole new experience to not seem them running. It made him want to rip his hair out. The noise overloaded his senses. They passed by all the food stalls and the smells merged into an unidentifiable gaseous mixture. His stomach and rolled and roiled. If he could of seen his own face, he would have been sure it was a shade of green.

How…can…they…stand this? He asked Chris, deeply annoyed  by it all. He felt the boy silently laugh above him and growled.

Its not that bad for me. I kinda like it. The kid stuck out his tongue and wiggled it, knowing very well that Nemis couldn’t see it. He also knew that Nemis would sense it, and quickly stopped. The Hero, who had been watching, started to hide her mouth, a laugh etched in her eyes.  She was obviously trying her hardest not to giggle.

That’s because you aren’t as sensitive as me, you little piss. Everything comes at me all at the same moment and its disorientating. Nemis gave a small glare towards the Hero and watched her turn around, a small grin still on her lips.

I know, I know. Don’t get mad at me, brother.

Nemis Cringed. How many times have I asked you not to call me that? Again, the kid laughed.  I mean it, call me brother again and I’ll dump you from my shoulders. It might even break your neck.

No you wont, big brother. You’re too nice to do that.

It was Nemis’ turn to laugh. Listen, kid, I’ve murdered for less. I’m not as nice as you seem to think I am.

You are nice…Otherwise… Why would the Demon King save a lowly half-breed like me?

Nemis stopped in his tracks, surprised by Chris’ words. How…How did you?

I may be weak, but its not like I can’t feel something. You’re so strong that I thought you’d come to finish me off. I’ve heard so many stories about you. You don’t differentiate between demons or humans, and hold yourself above them. You kill anyone and everyone. But, you save me… Big sister told me it was you.

Nemis was awed by the kid’s logic. It was wrong, but it was nice. How can you know that I’m not going to kill you later on so that I can eat you? How do you know that I wont take the Hero’s life? What if this is just a big game to me?

Chris pulled his hair and Nemis roughly shrugged him off. Standing in front of Nemis, the kid stared into his eyes. They were so pure, so innocent. They never faltered, and he just smiled.

       I believe in you.

Nemis rolled his eyes at Chris’ words, sighing for the Nth time that day.

Chris made a face and ran to the Hero. Sneakily, slipping his small hand into hers. Nemis gave up and walked beside them. It felt nice, forgetting all the obnoxious smells and noise. The more he became used to it, the less it bothered him and the less he felt like murdering people. They walked around for hours, stopping at various stores and restaurants. Besides a new tunic for the Hero and a small lunch, they bought nothing. It seemed liker she was searching for someone. He didn’t ask her and just continued to follow.
