Chapter Fifteen: The Demon King's Fear Of Mortality

He decided not to go back until the blood and vomit were so thoroughly washed from his skin that he began to bleed. And then he washed that away. His skin prickled and a whole new emotion rushed into his head.

It wasn't fear.

It wasn't desire.

It was fearful desire.

He was afraid of himself and the desire that was brimming inside him. Now that he knew that he was attached to her, he wanted to be near her bad.

Shaking that thought form his head, he summoned his servant. First things first. He thought.

Has Mao returned? He asked with much trepidation. There was a chance that Mao had not arrived yet, but knew that his hope was talking. Unlike him, Mao was punctual, he would come back as soon as he could.

He would have made a better demon king than I. He added to himself wryly.

Yes… of course Mao would already be there. Next, he asked the question he least wanted to ask.

Where is he?

Find..ing..you… A bolt of anger shot out from him to the servant. He felt as it jumped and whimpered with pain.

Did you tell him where I was, you ungrateful little piece of shit? Nemis was more than angry, he was livid with fury.

. It didn't answer him.

Did. You. Tell. Him. Where. I. Was. His voice was so cold that he felt akin to the Hero. He sounded like she did when they first met.

Yes… It finally answered after a moment.

Do you recall what I promised if you told him? Hmmm?

He…Say…You… No…Do…It… There was a bit of assurance in its stilted voice. Mao was partially right, he hadn't really intended to do it until then, but it didn't mean that the servant had to know. He needed to squash the little spark of rebellion growing in it, and kill any idea of it betraying him again.

He was wrong. I swear that when I come back… your family will be eating you for breakfast. You better hope I extend my stay. With that he broke contact and began to think.

Damn it. He'll soon be right on my trail. What is he going to think when he sees me with two humans, pretending, playing, acting as if I am a lowly mortal? He'll kill me. He is going to be so… He threw his hands up in the air, palms out, and blasted all the trees around him. Then he thanked his lucky stars that neither the Hero nor Gaitis were near him, they were still leagues away. What am I going to do? I want to stay with her and watch her for a little longer, but…

The only logical thing to do was to intercept Mao before he could find him, explain what he was doing-the whole predator and prey thing- and hopefully Mao would leave it at that. If he did it that way it would be so much easier, and neater, than if Mao found him.

Shion awoke to see the fire burning and Gaitis sitting near it, his hands clenching something. She smiled as she approached him, commenting on the cool night they were having as she sat down. Gaitis said nothing and she stared up at the open sky and remembered many nights she's spent gazing at it.

She hated sleeping in the dirt but she loved looking at the constellations and thinking about the old myths Ashthran told her.

Like poor Areowel. She was the daughter of a desolate king and one day she was forced to marry his enemy, but became a slave. Instead of living a life in such a terrible way, she threw herself from a tower and vowed to watch over the women of the world. The gods took pity on her and her plight and placed her in the stars, where she became the guardian of all distressed women, forever perched upon a tower of stars.
