Chapter Twelve: The Hero’s Disgust:

Nemis and the Hero learned that Guil, the brother of Gaitis, was in the service of princess Kaydahlia. Gaitis had been asked as well, but he’d hated the idea of being a “royal executioner” as he put it, and firmly declined. His brother, on the other hand, accepted it. From there on, the two decided to separate. Gaitis stayed awhile in the beginning but found the position his brother was assigned to distasteful and disgusting. He left and eventually ran afoul of the Abin mountain bandits.

He also spoke of the demons that haunted the area, and as he did, his gaze landed often on Nemis. It was as clear as water that he wondered about the black hair. Nemis was unaware of what the man was thinking, but he did know that Gaitis knew something he shouldn’t have even notice and it made Nemis cold with worry.

He contemplated murdering the man, but he liked him too much. The man was a peculiar specimen, and there was a certain quality that made it impossible to really hate Gaitis. Maybe it was the scar. It both bewildered and attracted Nemis, he wanted to know the cause badly.

Nobody brought it up and he was left wondering.

He could figure out just from looking at it that it didn’t come from any human. Through out his lifetime, Nemis had the pleasure of acquainting himself with many different types of weapons. Having been the subject of many a weapons abuse, he knew none would leave such a mark. None at all.

But, a demon’s claw would. In fact, it looked strikingly similar to the demon that “attacked” the Hero. The width and length were indeed the same.

He could only imagine having to live his whole life with such a mark on his face. Almost like a brand. The more he thought about it, the more he knew he couldn’t. How Gaitis survived each day like that was a small wonder.

That was what Nemis was thinking when Gaitis spoke. His words were heavier, darker, and it was clear he was in a serious mood.

“Shion, I heard a rumor and I was hoping you could confirm it. I was told that the Demon King struck the village of Ker’ries. Everyone is dead. The whole town was destroyed. I assumed that you would know about it.” Nemis watched as the Hero’s heart almost leapt out of her chest.

The Demon King. Sighted, a day or two away from where they were. It was a breakthrough. Shion was beyond excited.

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Nemis’ eyes widen quickly. Thinking nothing of it, she laughed.

“You’re not afraid, are you, Nemis?” She asked, half teasing, half serious. Even she would be terrified after being captured by the fiercest demon in the all the realms. She wouldn’t want to get within a walking distance of him. Even more so if she almost became his snack.

“Of course not.” He answered in a deep, soft voice.

Gaitis stared in confusion. Shion turned to face him. “He was about to be eaten by the Demon King when I found him. I was just wondering if he was anxious. Wouldn’t you be?”

Gaitis nodded in agreement. “Of course, no normal person wouldn’t be affected by that.” he tapped his cheek and smiled. “Of course, I don’t think Nemis here is all that normal.”

Nemis glowered at Gaitis for saying that. It was as if Nemis wasn’t sure what to think of Gaitis. One moment he was friendly, the next he was shooting scathing looks in the other man’s direction. Though his face was stony, his eyes were ever changing in emotion. That was another thing Shion enjoyed Nemis. He never ceased to make her wonder.
