Chapter Fourteen: The Hero’s Worry

“I’m sorry.” He said submissively as they entered a light forested area, his words not at all reflecting the annoyance and rage he held inside him. “I’m sorry I’m not like you and that nobody will room us.”

“It wasn’t you.” Growled the Hero, her voice bitter against the harshness of the cold air.

“Don’t worry, it was probably me and this big ole scar of mine.” Jested Gaitis. He smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes. They all knew it was because of Nemis’ black hair. The people of Elrath were famous bigots and Shion wanted to punch herself for forgetting. It didn’t matter that they offered to pay triple the regular amount.

It was no, no matter what.

In fact, after the third inn rejected them, Nemis silently walked off and waited for them on the outskirts of the village. He had lots of time to plan its destruction and remember the other places that had angered him. And then he remembered the town of Alrien. He vowed long ago that he would burn it to the ground on the same basis, but had forgotten. He wouldn’t destroy Elrath yet, as it would raise suspicion, but he would do it. The Hero and Gaitis would know it was him. He was sure she had already assumed some of him was not human.

The two of them came back to him within the hour, carrying three heavy canvas bags and a box of food. They came to him, grinning with determination. They tried to hide how upset they were, but he smelled it. It reeked and he wanted to ignore it. It would just make him more irritated.

“We got tents and bedrolls, so we should be fine tonight.” Offered Gaitis as he held out one of the bags. Nemis took it. “But if you get cold you can sleep with me tonight.” He winked and Nemis couldn’t help but laugh. Out of the corner of his he saw the Hero hide a giggle.

“If it gets any colder I might have to take you up on the offer.” He answered seriously. He didn’t mind the cold, he handled it much better than they did. His tone added to the Hero hunched over with laughter made Gaitis chortle like an idiot. Thumb out, he pointed it towards the Hero and grinned.

“She’ll go find a bear and force it to sleep with her.” Gaitis said. First the Hero blushed and then she took a swing at Gaitis. He moved out of the way just in time and her fist collided with a tree. She didn’t even flinch and leapt for him again. This time he wasn’t expecting it and her knuckles collided with his head. He moaned in pain as fell to the ground.

“There. If I get cold I’ll just steal your bedroll. You can keep Nemis, he’s like a block of Ice.” She turned to face Nemis, her fist still up. Behind her, Gaitis’ eyebrow raised. Noticing that her fist was still up, the Hero put it down and blushed. “Don’t mistake me for him either! I’ll never get of the time Guil thought I was his brother. He was buck naked…” Gaitis guffawed, making the Hero’s face go absolute crimson.

For some reason her words disconcerted him. He suddenly felt very aggravated.

“What do you mean; he mistook you for Gaitis?” He asked, confused. She blushed even deeper and stammered. In the end it was Gaitis who explained.

“We all had different rooms at an inn, and Guil got so blitzed that he went into her room instead of mine. Though I often think he did it on purpose. The pervert was as naked as a person could get. She beat the shit out of him, don’t know how well that worked considering him being clothe less and all.” Gaitis shot a sly glance toward the Hero.
