Chapter Seven: The Demon King’s Bite
Damn the Hero to oblivion for making us wear them now. I want my old clothes, you damn bitch.
Lifting his shirt uncouthly, Nemis began to scratch at his skin. The fabric rubbed against him with such frequency that he could not quell the itching. Looking over his shoulder, he figured the Hero was far enough away from them that he would be able to spell his and the boy’s new clothes. He did so, and let out a sigh of relief.
Better? He asked. Chris nodded.
This is the first time I’ve gotten new clothes since… Chris stopped and paused, his mind voice quivering like he was crying. Since before momma got sick. Tears slid down the boy’s face and he full on sobbed. It was quite the sight Chris being mute and all. Tears and snot mixed and the boy grabbed a hold of Nemis’ new shirt and placed his face on the older males thigh. I miss her so much, I miss my momma, please don’t leave me like she did! Please!
Overwhelming pain filled Nemis’ stomach, the same as when he first saw the boy. The words Chris cried out so desperately clung inside his mind.
Please don’t leave me like she did. Like momma.
I wasn’t lying when I said I went through the same as you. He whispered amidst the boy’s wracking sobs. I lost my mother too. He added. He’d lost two mothers but he wasn’t going to tell the boy that.
Chris turned, stunned, crystal tears still in his eyes. Really?
Nemis nodded. Tell me about her, about your life.

The walk was slow and tedious. Her friend lived a league away from the town, maybe a bit closer, Shion hadn’t really measured it. Yet, the farness actually gave her time to think and enjoy the serene surroundings. Flowers ready to bloom filled the area as she walked, and the sent of wet dirt met her nose. It smelled good. It smelled earthy.
She contemplated about nothing and idly spent her time staring at the reemerging wildlife. Birds chirped in the air and crickets sang. She even saw a pile of ants. All of it delighted her. Then she saw the marker telling her that a spacious little cottage was at the end of a dirt path and she panicked.
What am I going to say to Vestiaa?! I can’t just say “here, have this kid”. She would never go for that. “Yeah, since your half and he’s half…”Gods no! What the hell am I thinking.?
Shion cringed inside her head. She felt like a rash, irresponsible idiot and wanted to turn around right away. She was about to when she noticed a figure squatting in the garden staring directly at her.
“Vestiaa!” Shion exclaimed with faint amazement. The red haired woman’s head swiveled and she squinted her eyes so that she could see who called to her. Vestiaa stood up instantly, her mouth a perfect oval.
“Shi!” The woman called out, her hands waving a happy welcome. Shion laughed as her friend bounced towards her. The pure
happiness on the woman’s face was worth the slightly long walk it took to get there.
Standing in front of Shion was one of the only people she could truly call a friend. Vestiaa was a proud half breed, and liked to bring attention to her differences with a bang, that’s what made Shion like the woman as much as she did.
