"She's gone." Joe's voice pierces the silence.
"Who?" Pete replies without looking away from the road.
"Jessica."
The car goes silent. My heart starts to pound faster. I rub my hands against my pant leg trying to whip the sweat from my hands. I look back at Jacks and Patrick. They're huddled up in the backseat, Patrick's cradling Jacks against his chest. Jacks looks like she's going to cry. She balls her hands up in Patrick's shirt. I feel like I'm intruding on such an intimate moment so I turn my head back to the front. Joe's back to texting Andy. A sudden burst of anger surges through me. I start to pull my hands through my hair. Why did this have to happen to us of all people? We didn't do anything wrong, but yet God is punishing us? What the hell? I ball my hands up and try to calm myself down, but this only makes me madder.
"WHY DID THIS HAVE TO HAPPEN TO US?" My sudden outburst shocks the car. The fact that no one replies only makes my anger even worse. I try to calm down, but my attempts fail. Finally Pete pulls over. He gets out and comes over to my door. I bury my face in my hands. Sobs start to wrack my body. I feel strong arms start to wrap around my body.
"Shhhh. Shhhh. It's going to be able okay. Abby shhhh." Pete whispers in my ear. And in just that moment, I believe him.
