There were 3 Estates, the first estate was the nobility, the second was the clergy and the third was everyone else. There was absolute monarchy in France at the time, the King and Queen were King Louis the XVI and his wife Marie Antoinette, they got married when Louis was 15 and Marie was 14. The French society was strictly divided, the king and Aristocracy had lots of power and $$$, every one else had no power and no $. French was in debt for all the wars, and they lost most of them so that also got them bankrupt. The bank stopped loaning money to the country because they were in big debt. The weather got worse and it started hailing which killed most the crops. And in result the cost of food went up and people were outraged. These small things led up to revolution because the poor and the mediocre were being pushed around to often. And they were treated unfairly and were a targeted population.
