Napoleon won the heart of the people. In 1795 Napoleon defends the delegates of the National Convention from royalists rebels. In 1796 the directory appointed Napoleon to lead the French army against Austria and Sardinia. He used his position to seize power from the Directory in a military Coup d'état. He declared himself first council of the French Republic . As First Consul of the French Republic he gave himself wide reaching powers. In 1804, Napoleon crowned himself Emperor of France and all the lands he had conquered.
