Her brown hair cascaded down both sides of her face. Her lips were dark red, her eyes a chocolate brown. They were soft and kind. Her cheeks were rosy pink. The corners of her mouth were turned down. Was she unhappy, guilty, or confused?
"Evony?" Sarah called my name from the door.
I didn't answer her and I didn't turn around to face her. I just stayed where I was as I stared at the girl in the mirror. She looked like someone else, someone I didn't recognize.
"Evony?" She called me again, now standing behind me.
I saw her reflection in the mirror, just above my right shoulder. Her blonde hair managing to escape being behind her ears and falling to the side of her face. She had a question mark on her face and her eyes showed worry. Her lips were also turned down into a frown.
She looked at my reflection and smiled.
"Evy, it's going to be alright. Trust me." She declared.
"Sarah..." I managed to say, my emotions clear in my voice.
I was scared and of course guilty. I peered at Sarah. A frown was placed back on her face. She put her hand on my shoulder in comfort.
"Don't worry Evy. It's not a real date. Just two platonic friends going out to dinner. I see no harm and no fore play. So stop feeling guilty, your not doing anything wrong."
"I hope your right."
"Of course I am Evy. Haven't I always been right?" she asked me.
I thought back to all the times we shared together and there was a lot. I remembered everything and I never recalled, not even once, her being wrong.
When I didn't reply to her question she must've took that as confirmation that she was never wrong. She gave me a huge smile and helped me put my necklace on.
"Thought so." she said, chuckling.
Just then there was a knock on the door.
"Um, Anson's here." Carter said, his head peeking into the room.
"Tell him she'll be down in a minute." Sarah told Carter shooing him away.
He obeyed and quickly disappeared.
I slowly got up taking my eyes off my reflection in the mirror. I faced towards Sarah and took a deep breath. I closed my eyes and used Sarah's words to calm my nerves. I'm not doing anything wrong, it's not a real date.
"Evy, look at me." I slowly opened my eyes and looked at her. All the while my heart was beating frantically. "Don't look so miserable."
She gave me a warm smile. I forced a smile and she grimaced.
"Maybe you shouldn't smile." she continued. " Just don't look like this dinner is killing you, it isn't. If you want to leave early or you feel awkward, call me. I'll be there faster than you can say Mississippi."
"Sarah? Do you really think this is alright? I mean would you go to dinner with a guy you barely know while Carter was away?" I asked her.
"Well no, bu-"
"See! If you wouldn't why should I?" I asked her, cutting her off.
"Evy this isn't about me, it's about you! If anything this is a "I'm sorry" dinner. I mean he almost killed you! He deserves to take you out." she exclaimed. "And anyways he's already here. It's kind of to late to cancel."
My hands were shaking at my sides and my palms were sweaty. I took another deep breath and tried to compose myself. I could do this. I walked towards the opened door and turned back to look at Sarah.
"I hope your right about this." I told her.
"I am." she replied with a confident smile.
I placed my hand in the banister and stared down the stairs. My vision was hazy and my hold on the railing was unstable. I took my first step down the stairs and mustered all the strength I had as i slowly descended.
As the living room came into view I stopped short. My heart was beating loud in my ears. I felt someone place there hand on my shoulder. I jumped at the contact.
"You can do it Evy." Sarah said.
She then side stepped me and walked into the living room.
"Hi Anson." I heard Sarah say. "So nice to finally meet you."
I could picture the smile she would have on her face. I also knew she was biting back a few words. She was avoiding talking about the other night. When she of course saw our almost kiss.
My fingertips reached up to touch my lips. I remembered how it felt to feel Anson's lips hover over mine. I remembered how badly I wanted him to kiss me. Most importantly I remembered how guilty i felt and the guilt i still feel now.
I finally used the last of my courage to walk into the room. My eyes were focused on the ground but when I looked up I saw those stunning hazel- green eyes. I managed an okay smile.
His eyes brightened and he had a grin on his face.
"Evony..." That was all I heard him say.
The rest of my mind was in the clouds and the only thought I had was "kiss me", as I zeroed in on his lips that were so inviting.
