We took our seats and had our waiter, who was Anson, bring two more chairs to our table for Sarah and Carter. He then ordered their food and gave me a wink when no one was looking. I looked down at my hands, blushing.
Butterflies swirled in my tummy and my hands felt sweaty. I wiped my hands on the side of my dress and fidgeted with the hem of it.
"So how have you been Caleb? Haven't seen you around much." Sarah told Caleb.
I looked up at Sarah. I could see she was holding herself back from saying something rude to him. Throughout high school this is how our double dates used to be, awkward. Plain and simple. Caleb didn't like Sarah and Sarah didn't like Caleb. Although Carter didn't like Caleb either he was better at not showing it when around him.
Carter had his arm around Sarah and was calm and relaxed. He had an expressionless face and just stared straight ahead, like he wasn't even paying attention to the conversation. Which I knew he was.
"I've been good, better now that Evony is back to her old self." Caleb said smiling at me.
I forced a smile back. In my peripheral vision I saw Sarah glance at me and frown. She knew my smile was fake, but obviously Caleb didn't. Caleb put his arms over my shoulders and pulled me close to him.
"Where have you been lately? How's business going?" Sarah continued the conversation.
"Well mostly in the office. As for business, well it couldn't be any better. My dad actually let me have control over some of his investments, so money is multiplying." Caleb said happily. He always loved to talk about business.
"That's interesting." Sarah replied without enthusiasm.
Carter started to rub her shoulder and turned towards her and gave her a smile. She relaxed and leaned her head on his shoulder. He held her closer to him and kissed the top of her head.
"Talking about business, I forgot to tell you something Evy. I have to go to New York for a week." Caleb said looking at me.
I pulled away from him and looked at him, a little disappointed. I just got him back and he was leaving already. However I knew that this trip was probably important and anything that was important to him was important to me.
"When?" I asked him.
"I have to leave tomorrow morning." He said.
"Tomorrow morning?" I exclaimed.
I mean I knew this business trip would be important but I little heads up would've been nice. I cant believe he didn't tell me earlier.
"I mean I don't 'have' to go-"
"No just go, a little heads up would've been nice." I said cutting him off.
I was angry at him and moved my chair away.
"You can come with me if you want." He told me.
Even from the sound of his voice I knew he didn't want me to go.
"No it's fine." I replied harshly.
If I didn't know any better I would say that his body relaxed. He then pulled my chair closer to him and wrapped his arms around me. A smile was plastered on his face. His cute dimples showing as he smiled, his brown eyes happy. My heart melted. I couldn't be stay mad at him.
"Don't be mad at me Evy. I would've told you sooner, but I kind of forgot about it until just now." He replied, softly so only I could hear him.
His kissed me on my lips and smiled.
"Forgive me?" He asked when he pulled away. I smiled and my heart beat wildly within me.
"Of course. I can never stay mad at you." I told him. He smiled back and kissed my forehead.
"I promise I'll get you something." He told me as he kissed me once more.
My hand moved to his cheek and held his face as our lips moved together. It wasn't intense or awkward, it just felt good and normal. My lips moved slowly with his and our tongues did a tango. I could feel my heart start accelerating.
I pulled away when a plate clinked in front of me. I looked up and saw Anson shoot death glares towards Caleb. Caleb didn't notice however, he instead began eating his food. My face heated up and I looked at Sarah. She just stared at me with a thoughtful look on her face. Meanwhile, Carter was looking at Anson with an odd expression.
I looked back up at Anson and this time he looked at me. The anger in his eyes faded and was replaced with confusion and sadness. I gulped. The date with Anson was sounding less appealing by the minute. Yet again, I couldn't help the way my heart jumped out of my chest when I looked into his green-hazel eyes.
"Will that be all, ma'am?" He asked me professionally. A smile tugging at the side of his mouth.
I peered at Sarah and saw that she was giving Anson an approving smile. I shook my head no.
"Actually can you pour us some more wine?" Caleb asked Anson, not bothering to look at him as he ate his lobster.
"Yes, sir." Anson said and went to Caleb's side of the table.
He grabbed the wine bottle that was directly in front of Caleb and poured it into his glass.
"Will that be all sir?" Anson asked, his voice tight. He glanced at me, his eyes landing on mine for no longer then a second.
"Yes actually. If I catch you looking at my fiancé again, I'll make sure your fired." Caleb said looking up from his plate and playing with his knife. I looked at Caleb with wide eyes. Anson was barely looking at me, well he kind of was, but how would Caleb notice. I had to give him more credit.
"Sir?" Anson asked confused.
Caleb laughed a somewhat evil laugh.
"Don't act, I'm not dumb."
I saw Sarah raised her eyebrow at that. She was probably thinking that he was. Carter once again was just observing. I rested my hand on Caleb's arm.
"Caleb, stop." I told him in a soft voice. "He wasn't even looking at me."
I lied through my teeth and guilt swept through my conscience. Caleb pivoted towards me and for an instance we connected. Just how it used to be. When we could tell each others thoughts. Caleb's shoulders relaxed a bit and his deep brown eyes softened. He turned back towards Anson.
"Im sorry." Caleb said. I knew he was biting back his pride. His ego shrinking a bit, but his mother taught him to confront and admit his mistakes. "It was just the wine talking."
With that Caleb shooed Anson away. Anson nodded, gave me one last glance, and walked away. Caleb looked at me and smiled. I smiled back, feeling guilty. Sarah looked at me with a frown and Carter well he was just observing, as always.
