Hide and Seek

I was crouched in the bushes on the side of my best friends street. It was her 18th birthday party and like we always did; we played hide and seek. I had never liked this game. Even as a kid when anyone suggested it, I would go inside. It was more fun now.

I heard Crystal start to whistle softly and the soft patter of Suzanna's shoes on the concrete. I pushed myself closer to the wall and tried to get as low to the ground as I could. Chrissy hid behind a van across the street, Trista was hidden in someone's front planter and Gabi was sitting behind a pillar by Crystals front door.

I looked to my side and froze. There was a dark human like form crouched maybe five feet away from me. My breath caught in my throat and I gasped audibly. The persons head turned and looked at me pushing a finger to their lips as if telling me to keep quiet.

"Mae! You can come out. I got Suzie!" Crystal yelled.

"Yeah! Give me a sec!" I got up and moved a little closer. "Excuse me. Are you okay?" The figure moved out into the light. I saw now it was a guy. He had shoulder length brown hair and a sharp angular face that was still soft enough. He was wearing a pair of dark washed jeans, a tight black tshirt and a leather jacket.

"Yeah fine." I heard him mutter. I should probably stay away from him right? Yeah. That would be anybody's first response. To run and never look back, but somehow I was strangely interested in him. "Go away, just go away. Shit. Shit. Shit. No. I don't want to have to do this." He got up suddenly and grabbed my arm.

"What are you doing?" He pulled my arm and dragged me out of the bushes.

"Mae!!!"

"Shit! RUN!" He yelled and kept pulling me in the direction of the woods. We ran and ran. He stopped after a couple of minutes and tore a piece of his shirt and gagged me. His eyes darted around and his hands wandered into the bag on his back. He seemed to be reeling over every single movement or motion of any sort. I couldn't scream. I could barely move. His hand was wrapped around my hand so tightly I knew that by the time I was released I would have a bruise. We ran deep into the hills it seemed like hours, but I knew it hadn't really been that long. We stopped at a ridge where there was a circle of rocks. In the center there was a makeshift tent with another small ring of rocks with some twigs. He pulled the piece of his shirt out of my mouth. I knew I probably should have screamed. I didn't. I stood there and studied him. My breath eventually evened and he went into the tent. I sat down on the leave covered ground and pulled my knees to my chest. What am I doing? Were they worried about me or did they think nothing of my disappearance?

"I am assuming your name is Mae..." He said standing over me. I nodded my head. "Here's the deal. I shouldn't have took you, but you found me. You shouldn't have found me."

"I'm sorry, but I swear just let me go and I will go home. I won't tell anyone, just that I went for a walk. I swear."

"No. I don't trust you."

"Please." I was begging now. The tears were forming in my eyes.

"No." He turned away from me and rubbed his temples. He seemed to be tortured by himself. "What do I do? I'm too deep in now. What the hell do I DO?" He yelled to no one in particular.

"Is there anything I can do? Talk to me. Maybe I can help you." He inhaled deeply.

"I hurt- I-I killed my best friend. It was and accident we were goofing around with his dad's gun. And it just went off. His parents convinced the court that I killed him. ON PURPOSE. I got out though. On my trial I got out. But I have no money. I can't get a job so I have to steal, but this time I got caught and the guy called the cops. And here I am at these bushes and you are there. Now I here with you. In the woods with a new charge of kidnapping." He said so fast I couldn't keep up. He fell to his knees and threw his hands up. I knelt down by him and rubbed his back. "Stop. Don't touch me."

"Okay. Okay." I heard footsteps crunching on leaves and twigs and tensed up. He did too. We saw flashlights coming through the trees and the sound of drunk teenagers laughing and stumbling through the dark. He leaned in almost immediately and kissed me. A kiss full of passion and longing. He pushed me down to the ground and climbed on top of me never disconnecting our lips. It felt wrong. But good at the same time. No. I can not kiss a fugitive. I heard the kids leave. He had done that to get them to leave. He pulled away from me still propped on my thighs. He cleared his throat and got off of me.

"Sorry about that." He said sullenly.

"That uh. That is okay." I said shortening each syllable. He got up and wiped the leaves off his jeans. "So what are you going to do about it?" He thought for a second.

"I don't know." I got up and sat on a rock; he joined me.

"Well. I don't know what to say."

"You don't have to say anything." We sat in silence. It was funny how comfortable I was with this guy. I didn't know his name, not to mention anything about him. For all I know he could be a serial killer rapist person and here I am sitting right next to him.

"I know nothing about you." I stated dryly.

"Yeah."

"So you are a fugitive?"

"Not by choice."

"Hmm." I thought. "How much extra time would you get if you went back?"

"2 maybe 3 years."

"Why don't you just go back? You can't run forever." I saw the anger start behind his eyes.

"GO BACK?" He inhaled deeply and got up off the rock. "I don't think you understand. They are giving me five years AT LEAST for manslaughter. Then if they find about this. I will get at least ten. I wanted to go to college and be a teacher. I can't teach if I have a criminal record!" He yelled very loudly pacing around me.

"Well the you should have been more careful. It's not my fault you shot someone." I responded calmly. He huffed and went back to the tent. I looked at my watch. 10:30. Shit.

I didn't realize I had fallen asleep, but I awoke to him shaking my shoulders. I opened my eyes. It was still dark with the Stars still shimmering bright in the sky.

"Get up." He said gently. I lifted myself off the rock and stretched my muscles. He grabbed his bag and my hand and led me out of the forest. I was quiet at first and then my mind started wandering.

"What are you doing?" I asked him grabbing his wrist and stopping his pace.

"I am taking you back and then going back to the station." He started walking again.

"Why?"

"I can't keep running. I don't want to live in a tent hiding from the cops my whole life."

"Well I congratulate you. Give me your hand." He gave me his hand and I looked up at him. "Do you have a pen?" He looked at me strangely.

"Uh yeah I think so." He dug in his backpack and pulled out a pen. I wrote my phone number on the space between his thumb and index finger.

"Call me when you get a chance please."

"I will." It didn't take long for us to arrive back to Crystals house. He stopped at the street corner where we had first met. It felt like ages ago.

"Thank you. I think you are making the right decision." I said slowly grabbing his hand. He squeezed it and placed a kiss on my palm.

"So do I. Thank you for helping me make it."

"Anytime." I turned and started to walk away. "Oh! I didn't get your name." The sun was just starting to crest over the hills.

"Keith. Keith Summers."

"Thank you for an adventure Keith Summers."
