I was tempted to tell her Brett didn't like her and she should stop trying to get his attention but I didn't. Not because I was too nice or whatever but because I didn't want to ruin what Brett wanted, which was to impress his family and keep the legacy.
Before I could utter a word in reply, Destany already went over to where Tyler was sitting. She acted as if she was never with me.
I sighed and started to write things about me. What was there to say? I wrote down a few obvious ones, I'm a girl, my name is Leighton, I'm from Paris, what my mom does, what my dad does, but then I was stumped. What else could I say about myself? Maybe who my best friends were? How I threw up on the plane ride here? How I'm being terrorized by the most popular girl and her best friend? Oh gosh, nothing seemed good.
While I've been writing, I didn't notice that the room got strangely quiet. I looked up and saw that half the class was staring at me. What was wrong with them?
I figured they were still laughing about my pants. It's been more than half the school day, will you guys get over it? I wanted to yell but I didn't. What if it wasn't the pants. That would be embarrassing.
Someone tapped me on the shoulder. I turned around and this girl cupped her hands around her lips and whispered in my ear. "You have a stain." I rolled my eyes as I knew exactly what "stain" she was talking about. Okay I fell in the mud, not pooped in my pants.
"A ketchup stain," she continued to whisper and I blushed furiously and looked down at what she was talking about. Then I remembered that I had my period about a week ago and it shouldn't have come again so quickly. I realized that it was an actual ketchup stain.
As understanding washed over my face, the whole class, or who had been watching, burst out laughing. I didn't think it was all that funny and I told them so.
"Should've saw that look on your face!" said the girl who told me between giggles. "That was pure gold!"
Mr. Carl came over to see what all the commotion was about. When he saw a little pool of red that ketchup package made when it dripped on the floor, he nodded in understanding. "You better go to the washroom."
"It's not my time of the month.... It's Destany's fault." I pointed my finger as Mr. Carl gave her a disapproving look.
"Lilly thought of it," she pointed at the girl who told me.
"Innocent joke," she said, playing it off. "Just trying to get the new girl welcomed for what we have in stored for her."
"Really? That was an innocent joke?" he demanded. "Let's see what I have in stored for you..." He opened a drawer in his desk and pulled out a pad. "What's this? An office reference? Guess the desk has spoken." He used his pointer finger and made a 'come here' signal. "Leighton, you may go to the washroom now, just to clean up."
I smiled, holding in my laughter. The moment I left the class, I started laughing at what just happened. Serves her right.
I walked into the washroom I've grown so familiar with, especially since this is my third time being here today. I checked my pants. I turned around and saw that there was a huge red mark that blended in with the already stained brown.
"Shoot..." I said and took a paper towel. I was going to have to do it... I placed it underneath the water and started to rub the ketchup off. It only made it bigger. Oh great. I opened the zipper of Brett's sweater and decided to use it on my butt instead. After a very lame attempt at trying to dry the seat, I tied the sweater around my waist.
I checked the clock that was in the washroom. I felt like it was put there to make whoever skipped class feel guilty about doing it. It showed me that the class was going to end in 10 minutes. I walked out of the washroom just to bump into Lilly who was being escorted to the office by one of the boys who sat in the front. I don't think he saw what happened to me because he wasn't pointing and laughing. Or maybe he was just too nice.
