I followed my memory, threw the door and threw the passage of winding hallways until I reached one hospital room. Occupied. On the bed was a boy still lying there, Ike peacefully in his slumber. No tubes or IV's sticking out of his body.
I breathed in slowly and closed my eyes, blinking slowly. I smiled and approached his bed from the door of the hospital room. "Oh thank god, Ike!" I cried out.
The sound of two voices, made me turn around and look at two men talking to each other and walking towards Ike's bed.
"Tragic" one of the men muttered, holding a corner of a white sheet. The other man mumbled something underneath his breath, and nodded his head, he was carrying the other corner of the sheet.
I watched them, stepping out of the way, they couldn't see me and continued to walk towards Ike. I felt my heart starting to pound faster and my hands became clammy.
What are they doing? I asked, to myself.
He's dead.
I shook my head and I started to feel my stomach lurch. The white sheet that they had been holding was placed over Ike's body. Covering him up from the world.
I fell to the ground and the beeping of a heart monitor pounded in my brain. I cried out. "Ike! You selfish idiot! You were all I had left!" I cried, sobbing, feeling tears stream down my cheeks.
I would never get to yell at him, never use the annoyed tone or scolding voice. Never see him advance from t-ball to baseball. Never see him grow a beard, never see him graduate from high school.
Never ruffle his hair in the morning or have him cover for me when I snuck out at night. Never see him play the piano again, the amazing sound that protruded from the piano, beautiful and sweet.
Never again would I hear Mom yelling at him for tracking mud in the house, or eat the meals he used to prepare for us. Never have another brother as amazing as him.
I opened my eyes and stared at the world around me. Gray. Dark, no point. That's when I made up my mind. I give up.
I win. The deep voice boomed.
