"No! Stop it, Huckleberry!" the music played loudly before the DJ announced that it was gonna be a slow song coming next.
Being the persistent boyfriend that he was, Lucas pleaded Maya to go out with him on the dance floor.
"C'mon, Pancake! Just this once?" his beautiful green eyes screamed "please" and Maya couldn't help but give in to his puppy-dog eyes and his sweet little pout.
"Fine, but just one dance cowboy."
"Yes, thanks babe," he said as he planted a kiss on her forehead gently, leading her out into the middle of the gym where everybody could see her.
"Why'd you lead me out here?" Maya asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Well, why not? What boyfriend doesn't wanna show everybody their striking girlfriend?" They were under the disco ball, the center of everyone's attraction.
"Ranger Rick, I don't know how to dance!" she whisper-shouted, flapping her arms up and down frantically.
"Um, it's fine, dear. Just follow me and I'll teach you the steps."
"Right," she put her hands around his neck, and he placed his hands just above her waist. In his arms she felt protected, and that was good considering the fact that she was at risk of humiliating herself in front of every single person in the room.
"Okay, sweetheart. You don't need to do anything fancy... Just sway, got it?" he held her tighter, closer to his body.
"Yeah, I think so."
"May I have this dance, m'lady?"
"Of course, dear sir," they started dancing, gazing dreamily into each other's eyes. The spotlight turned to them, but they just melted into each other's arms, not caring about the rest of the world.
Suddenly, Maya laughed.
"What?" Lucas smiled, furrowing his eyebrows in confusion. "Is there something on my face?"
"No, no, it's not that, Huckleberry. It's just that of all the years we've been dating now is the only time that I realises your green eyes have small specks of blue and grey in them."
"Really, even I didn't know that. What a great girlfriend you are, Maya Hart."
"I don't mean to brag, but yeah, maybe I am." they laughed again, as he spun her around, ending the song.
"That was nice, wasn't it?" she said, her hand still in his.
"It was, princess. Want me to go grab some punch?"
"No, unless you wanna get wasted," she scoffed.
"What?" he was once again confused and naïve.
"We're a bunch of seniors at a high school dance where there are barely any teachers. Don't you think some crazy goofballs would've spiked the punch? " she explained to the Texas native.
"Oh, right."
"So, Lucas."
"Now what?"
"I don't know."
They both shifted their eyes towards the dance floor, where Riley and Farkle were slow-dancing to "Classic" by MKTO. Everybody around them was dancing with their shoes off, partying the roof off the gym.
"Maybe we should leave them for now," Lucas suggested.
"Yeah..." Maya trailed, her eyes landing on Lucas.
"Hey Huckleberry?"
"Yes, princess?"
"I'm tired," she said, her eyes starting to droop.
"I know that, sweetheart. Do you wanna go home now?"
"That would be nice," she mumbled, falling into Lucas' arms, then he carried her, bridal-style, out of the school and back to her apartment.
