Lucas ran a hand through his hair. He didn't know what to do anymore. So many things happened in so little time.Everything came crashing down too fast. His relationship, his friendships, his family. He needed someone to talk to. And now that he thought of it, he knew exactly who.
"Hey, I'm sorry. It's really late, but can you come over? I need someone right now, and I don't know who else to turn to," he spoke into the phone, as he hugged his pillow and lied down on his bed.
"Sure, I'll be there in a minute," he heard as he put his phone on his table and rubbed his face. He's been crying for a while now.
"Knock knock," a muffled voice from his window leading to the fire escape could be heard as his head shot up and ran towards it.
"Thanks for coming," he said, letting her in.
"No problem, Huckleberry. Anything for a friend," she smiled, and sat down on his bean bag. "Now. What's wrong, it's gotta be something bad, am I right? To come to me for advice, now this is serious. Talk to me, Lucas."
He bit his lip and it took him one look at Maya to break down into tears. Maya, on the other hand, was speechless. She never thought that her protection from those who were stronger than her, the quarterback of the school's football team, the most popular guy in school, would trust her so much that he'd break down in front of her.
"I-I, Lucas, come 'ere," Maya knelt over beside him, hugging him. "Tell me what's wrong. It'll help. I promise."

"So that's what happened? Missy dumped you for Billy, Zay doesn't wanna be your friend anymore, and your parents are divorcing? I don't see what's the problem here. I mean, sometimes, life will throw you on the ground. All you have to do is beat the game and get up again. You can't score a touchdown by sitting on the bench, now can you?"
"I've never done this before, Maya. You have. I need you to tell me, how do I do this. You're the only one I know who knows how to do this. You're the strongest, yet most vulnerable person I know. And that's really great."
"Well, I don't really think that was a compliment, but I can tell you that things will get better. They always do."
"Thank you, Maya."
