"Sorry but the library is closed today," the librarian told us as she locked up the doors and prepared to go home.
Any other day I wouldn't have cared. I never really cared about the school library- I did all my homework at home and I preferred buying my books rather than borrowing them anyway. But this wasn't about me. This was about Hayes as well.
Hayes and I had been paired up since we were both ill in the history lesson when our teacher decided she would actually be fun and let us do a project in pairs rather than write essays. Apparently the rest of the class got to pick their partners but Hayes and I got stuck with each other.
And it wasn't a project that one of us wanted to work independently on either- our teacher still managed to make something as simple as a project as complex and boring as possible.
So we both decided we would meet up after school at the school library and we would work for about an hour every day that week to get it finished. But the library was closed.
"You have to be kidding me," I moaned, slouching against the wall.
"We have to finish this project somewhere!" Hayes groaned, slouching next to me whilst throwing his bag to the floor. I copied him. It was nice to get some sort of weight of my shoulder.
"I swear it's always open?" I said, annoyed because it could have been any other day/week- just not this one.
"It is! It's not even like we can just make it up another day because we're both too busy to do more than an hour," he sighed, running his hands through his hair.
"And I'm not even sure if we'll finish the project with the plan we had- let alone one day less!'
A phone beeped. It wasn't mine though because mine had run out of battery during maths last lesson.
He apologized before getting out his phone and checking his message. Suddenly, he was standing up straight, grinning at me.
"I've got a plan," Hayes announced, seeming quite proud of himself.
"Great. Can I hear it?" I replied, raising my eyebrow.
"Ok so my parents are still at parents evening with my sister and my brothers aren't home so we could do the project there? At least it will be quiet," he suggested. I twisted my mouth, thinking. Hayes and I were friends but only because he's been in all of my classes for like four years. Being in his house alone with him might be a bit awkward...
"Sure," I agreed, picking up my bag and following him out of the school. We really needed to finish that project...
**
3 hours into the project and things weren't actually that bad. I expected it to be really awkward but somehow it wasn't.
About two hours into working, we decided to take a break and long story short- we ended up sharing a plate full of cookies with handmade decorations on top.
"You know... They actually don't taste that bad," Hayes said, eyeing the last cookie. Spinning it around in his hands, he looked up at me for my opinion.
"I agree. I expected a lot worse to be honest. Especially with me helping out- I'm surprised we haven't got food poisoning!"
"Well I guess we'll find out in the morning!" He laughed, suddenly munching on the sad attempt of a star.
"Hayes! I'm home!" A female voice yelled.
"Hey mum! Where's the others?" He yelled back.
"They went to the shop to get some things but they'll be back soon," she said. Soon she had stopped doing whatever she had been doing and was standing under the door frame looking at me.
