Chapter Nineteen

I stared as the guards cautiously came closer. How did they find us, and so quickly? No one should know we’re here. And why are the guards here? Shouldn’t the king and his colleagues be here?

I saw the pack members attack the guards. It was over quickly. The guards didn’t stand a chance. What was the point of sending them here? They were mere humans with no strength compared to the wolves.

“What was the point of them coming here?” I asked out loud.

“Those blood suckers are playing at something.” Caesar said. “They sent those soldiers here for a reason. I don’t know what reason, but they weren’t here for nothing.”

The bodies of the guards were dragged away to another part of the woods where they were burned. The pack was back to training and I sat outside the cave watching them.

“You know they’re coming, right?” Pearl asked me, taking a seat beside me. “The vampires. They know our location and who knows when they’ll officially strike? We have to prepare ourselves to take shelter during battle.”

“Take shelter?” I asked.

“We’re not going to be out here during the battle. We’ll be hurt, maybe even killed. We’re human, Ellie. We have to stay away.”

“I don’t want to stay away. I want to stop this battle. I can only do that if I’m out here. And if I can’t stop the battle. I at least want to protect Caesar and Demetri.”

I don’t know what I’d do if they got hurt. I admit that I love them both. I want them to be safe.

“What’s up?” Caesar asked, making me jump. He was sitting beside me.

“Ellie here wants to be part of the battle.” Pearl said.

“You’re joking right?” Caesar asked me. “You can’t be out here, it’s far too dangerous. You could be hurt, or possibly killed. I won’t let that happen.”

“I’ll be fine. No one would hurt me.”

“You don’t know that. Those bloodsuckers are heartless, and you forget that most of the pack dislikes you. It’s too great of a risk.”

“You can’t stop me.”

“Sure I can. I could lock you up somewhere you can’t get out of. Believe me, I’ll do it if it’ll keep you safe.”

I looked at him. I could see on his face that he was serious. He really would lock me up if it meant I was away from the battle.

“Fine.” I said with a sigh. “I’ll stay away.”

“Good.”

“Caesar!” Keith called. “Get your ass back over here.”

“I’m coming, relax.” Caesar said, getting up and making his way over to the training wolves.

I watched as the wolves tackled each other and pretended to rip each other apart. Will this battle change anything? Or will the two sides still hate each other?

“I’m going for a walk.” I told Pearl, standing up.

“Alone?”

“It’s morning. I’ll be fine.”

She let me leave. I walked past the training wolves and out into the woods. I don’t plan on going far. I just don’t want to watch them training. Just last night there was supposed to be a battle. Luckily we got away. What would it be like if the battle took place on the night of the full moon?
