My grip on Cry’s hand tightened significantly as I stood, watching Paul close the simulation door, trapping us with whatever horrors they had in store. It had come to the point that I really didn’t want to take part in this competition anymore, especially after what Paul had just said. ‘Stay away from the thing. As long as you stay away from it should be fine. The last two left will be the finalists.’

I didn’t know what ‘it’ was and I didn’t want to find out but...but I had to stay for Cry. I wasn’t ready to leave him yet.

“Pewds...you’re shaking friend,” Cry whispered through the darkness. I looked up at him, not replying until the safety of the countdown clock lit up and illuminated his masked face.

“I’m fine.”

“You look pale. Are you feeling okay?” he pressed, searching for an honest answer. The truth was an answer I was unwilling to give. I’ve played horror games before. I’ve stuck with them even when I hated it, even when I was terrified. So, I can do this. This is just a game too...just a realistic game.

Stepping closer to Cry, I leaned forward and brought my lips to his ear. “Just...just don’t leave me okay? Stick with me.”

My gaze flickered to Ken, watching cautiously as he stood in the corner, silent with his eyes glued to me. It was unnerving to say the least.

“Pewds just trust me. Nothing will happen to you...”

“No. Promise me Cry. Promise me you’ll stay with me,” I said with more force than before.

He brought our hands up, showing me our intertwined fingers and said, “We’re in this together. Why would I leave you?”

I held his gaze, or at least I thought I was. I couldn’t see his eyes behind the mask. He was right. He’s always been there so why would he leave now? I wrapped my arms around him, filled with a sudden affection towards the man I’d come to love, and he held me back without hesitation.

“Ken, get over here,” Cry called, unwrapping an arm from around me and beckoned him over. A wave of discomfort washed over me as Ken walked over, grabbing us both and joining in the hug. My whole body began ridged and awkward. I hated myself for it but I just didn’t feel safe around Ken anymore. Not after that dream last night, not after what he’d said to me yesterday. Cry might not believe me but I was sure, I was certain something had happened while we were away.

I clung onto Cry’s shirt, determined not to be torn from him this time, and peered over his shoulder. The counter showed we had two seconds left and I watched with worried eyes at the countdown finished. I found myself wishing, hoping that the timer would break and the simulation would be cancelled but of course, that didn’t happen.

“Cry...?”

“I’m here Pewds!” he called, sounding distant and distracted. I slowly opened my eyes as my hands stretch out either side of me. My fingers brushed against soft grass as the scene before me was revealed. I stared up at the night sky, thick clouds covered the moon and stars, creating nothing but blackness.

“Cry?”

“I’m right here,” he answered again but when I sat up and looked around I found nothing. The memories of my dream came back to me in a flash of fear and dread. I jumped to my feet, my gaze flickering around the thick forest surrounding me, searching for Cry but all I found was dense woodland. A heavy mist floated around the trees, weaving in and out and making the scene look a hell of a lot creepier than it needed to be.
