I sat on the sofa, watching Cry pull his suitcase down the stairs and glancing at Ken as he sipped a glass of water and gazed out the window, waiting for us to get ready. We’ll be in the simulation soon...I really don’t want to do it. After all the shit these simulations have put us through before, I doubt my fragile mind is going  to be able to cope with it right now but...

Remember who you’re doing this for. My gaze fell on Cry again. If I did this then he wouldn’t have to leave the competition to go with me, neither of us will. I won’t have to leave him.

“Is that all your packing?” Cry called to me, nodding towards the satchel which sat beside me.

“I’m going home Cry, most of my stuff is there anyway and I can always send for the rest of my stuff if I decided...not to come back.” Just saying the words felt wrong.

Cry pulled his case against the wall then hurried over to me, crouching in front of me and taking hold of my hands. “Hey, one step at a time yeah?” he whispered.

“Cry...you don’t have to come,” I told him, bringing his hands to my mouth and kissing them softly.

“I know.”

“Why are you doing this?” I asked, keeping my voice hushed so Ken wouldn’t hear. It was embarrassing enough having Cry witness the desperation in my voice.

He stretched his hand out, brushing his fingertips along my cheek before he answered. “I...I just need to.”
“You don’t owe me anything...”

“I know that. Shhh, stop this. We’ll get through this simulation and then we’ll leave...together,” he told me and stood up.

I just want to go home.

“Right, this simulation will be similar to the castle simulation, in the sense that you’ll have to find an item each. There are only four items and six contestants, you know the drill,” Paul told us and unlocked the simulation room door. “

“What do we have to  find?” Ken asked, stepping inside.

“Bells. Little tiny bells attached to ribbon,” he answered. The three of us nodded slowly, taking our places inside the room. I leaned against the wall, my arms folded across my chest, Cry stood near to me with his hands in his pockets and Ken remained by the door.

“I’ll be rooting for you all,” Paul added before shutting the door, leaving us in to face whatever they had in store for us.

The three of us remained in silence until the lights switched off, drowning us all in darkness.

“I really don’t feel up to this,” I mumbled, pushing myself from the wall and walking into the middle of the room. Cry and Ken shared a worried glance, clearly thinking I was going to pull some sort of stunt to get myself eliminated or something like that.

“It’s just the same shit over and over again,” I told them. The screen on the back wall began to light up, displaying the countdown clock that signified the limited time we had left in reality. “They herd us into this room and send us into a ‘simulation’ where they fuck with us. Don’t deny it...”

“Pewds,” Cry soothed, his voice low and soft. “It’s okay. You’re under a lot of stress right now but it’ll be over before you know it. I promise.”

“...I...I just can’t get the words out my mind,” I whispered, tugging at my hair as the phone call with my mother began to reply once again.

The number ‘5’ lit up the screen and Ken took a step closer. “You don’t need to worry. You have us both right here with you.”
