Dean was planning on asking Cas to grab a bite as they both had a free period, but before Dean could say anything to Cas the other boy was up and out of the door. Dean watched the back of the tan trench coat vanish around the corner and Dean could have sworn he saw something on the back. Something black, but it was only a glimpse before Cas disappeared completely down the hall. Dean muttered a silent “dammit Cas” under his breath and grabbed his stuff. Something about this boy intrigued him even if it made no sense to him.
Cas ran down the hallways. He ran out of the doors and around to the back of the school. The back of the school was dirty and there were bins knocked over but at least it was quiet and nobody went there. For a few seconds he hesitated but Cas knew it was his only option.
Dean hid just round the corner and peered round. Cas had his back to him so he was safe for the moment. For a few seconds Cas just stood there but slowly he sank to his knees and did something unexpected.
He started to pray.
Dean had been expecting drugs or alcohol by the way he was acting earlier but no, Dean had not seen this one coming.
“Gabriel if you can hear me I’m sorry. I know I shouldn’t be bothering you but I’m not ok. At all. My wings are heavy and I don’t know how long I can hold up. It hurts Gabe! Everything is harder without you around. I even miss you’re stupid pranks. I woke up this morning expecting to find glue in my shampoo or something but everything was so quiet. It was actually creepy. Please help me. Help your baby brother.”
He lowered his head and whispered a broken “please” through his tears.
Cas looked up to the heavens and put all his emotions: pain, loneliness, and fear, into his last statement.
“I am a failure”
And with those words Cas gave up.
Dean stifled a gasp as two shiny black wings unfolded from his classmate’s shoulder blades. But instead of spreading majestically they hung limp on Cas’ back as if even they had given up. Dean knew Cas could and maybe would kill him if he knew that Dean had seen this but hearing Cas call himself a failure hit a nerve for Dean. He knew what that felt like and he knew how broken Cas probably felt and it broke his heart. So instead of running away, he ran to the angel.
“CAS!”
Castiel turned around terrified at the voice. He saw Dean running towards him and was about to zap away when he saw something in Dean’s eyes. Cas expected terror and confusion but instead there was worry, concern and understanding. How could Dean possibly understand what Cas felt right now?
Cas let Dean kneel next to him and wrap his strong arms around the angel’s frail vessel.
Dean could feel Cas was not used to physical contact but soon the angel gave in and melted into Dean’s chest.
“It’s ok Cas. It’s best if we get you home now ok? Can you hide those babies for a little while longer?”
The corners of Castiel’s mouth twitched up when dean referred to his wings as babies. Dean drove the two of them back to Cas’ place and helped the angel get to his flat. Within two minutes the angel was passed out on the couch. Dean watched as Cas relaxed and for the first time Dean noticed just how beautiful he actually was. His black hair slightly tousled. The small creases between his eyebrows. His perfect, pink Cupid’s bow lips. His cheekbones a jaw-line perfectly shaped and his eyes, which, even closed, were tired and old. It made Dean realise how hard it must be to be an angel. How long had Cas been around? How much suffering had he seen? Dean got a new feeling. Dean felt possessive over Castiel. Cas was his broken angel and Dean intended on fixing him. Dean leaned back in the armchair across from Mr. comatose on the sofa closed his eyes. It can’t have been that long before he too dozed off.
The sun pierced through the window. Cas wearily opened his eyes and squinted at the room around him. Slowly the details started to come into focus and the sight in front of him was something he had never expected but somewhat comical. Dean was on the floor rubbing his head and groaning in pain. Behind him was a very smug looking Gabriel sucking casually on a lollipop. At the sight of his older brother Cas’ eyes lit up and he ran to him.
“GABE!” Cas crushed his brother in a hug.
“Hey Cassie! You ok?”
Castiel nodded happily, “Dean took care of me.”
“Does he know about- “
“Yeah... he seems ok about it.”
At that the two angels turned to look at the boy sprawled out on the floor. Cas noticed there were marbles scattered around the bottom of the chair and all around Dean. Cas shot an accusing glare at Gabriel who gave Cas an innocent look but a mischievous, proud smile started to play on the older angel’s lips.
“So Dean... I gather you have met my older brother Gabriel.”
“A pleasure” Dean’s retort was sarcastic but Gabriel just laughed and held out his hand to help Dean up. Dean got up and mumbled a “Thank you” and
“I’ll make breakfast” and walked into the kitchen.
A little known secret about Dean Winchester: He was an amazing cook.
Before he went into mechanics he wanted to pursue a career in cooking but naturally, his dad had said otherwise. So every time John asked Dean to cook for him dean would burn everything on purpose. Just to annoy him.
Dean stood at the cooker flipping over another piece of French toast when he over heard the conversation going on in the living room. From the cooker he watched the scene unfold.
“So Cas, are you really ok?” Gabe put his hands on his little brother’s shoulders.
“I don’t know Gabe. It’s just so hard. After one lesson I felt exhausted and I slept the rest of the day! How do you do it?”
“Practice Cassie. Practice. I’m here now.”
