The Lady Luck Hates Mai Ding

Proofread : biiinsgamboa

Life had been so wonderful for Mai Ding these past few years. He lived with the love of his life; An Ziyan. To be able to share his happiness and sadness with his beloved was indeed a bliss.

An Ziyan graduated from the university last year. Soon after he got his degree, An Ziyan took over his family business. He was now the man on the top of hierarchy in the An Group. It seemed that An Ziyan's father had been waiting long enough for the day till An Ziyan was willing to claim his position as the heir of An Group to come, so he could retire and release himself from all the stress he got in the business world.

As a consequences, An Ziyan became busier and the amount of time for them to be spent together lessened, but as for now they didn't see it as a problem yet. They managed to find a way to overcome it. Moreover, the busier and the more tired An Ziyan could be during day time, the hornier he became at night. No matter how many times Mai Ding tried to refuse, An Ziyan would still get his way into Mai Ding's pants.

Literally.

So let say that their quality time at night is the payback for their lessened time together.

As for Mai Ding himself, he graduated a little later than An Ziyan. He just got his degree two months ago. It wasn't his fault that he wasn't as brilliant as An Ziyan. These days Mai Ding had another goal in his life; aside from being a good 'wife' and partner for An Ziyan of course, that is to get a job and be able to make money on his own.

It's true that they already gor blessings for their relationship from both side of families. But there was this one person who still couldn't accept their love, that was An Ziyan's mother himself.

No matter how much Mai Ding tried to prove himself, An Ziyan's mother wouldn't change her perspective towards Mai Ding. She still thought that Mai Ding was after their money and he was the biggest gold digger in the world. Mai Ding would never deserve An Ziyan, because Mai Ding was nothing but an ordinary man who couldn't ever give her a grandchild. Mai Ding was a disaster for her family for putting An family in shame.

An Ziyan always said that to never take his mother's hurtful words into his heart. He would love Mai Ding even though he was a man, no matter what his mother, or anyone else, said about them.

But somehow one way and another, sooner or later, An Ziyan's mother's opinions about him were making its way into Mai Ding's head. He would be grateful if the mother of the man he loved could accept him. It would be his greatest happiness if An Ziyan's mother could see him as a capable man and he was worthy enough to be by her son's side. That's why Mai Ding had been trying to look for a decent job for the last two months. An Ziyan offered him a help, but he declined it, because for Mai Ding, his attempt to prove himself would be pointless if he at the very end he still got help from An Ziyan.

The only problem was... looking for a decent job wasn't as easy as Mai Ding thought.

It was another ordinary day that become a routine for Mai Ding since he had been graduating; job hunting.

He had been walking around from one building to another since early morning, looking for a company that was open for a job vacancy. But until late in the afternoon, all his efforts were put into waste.

"Ugh, why is it so hard just to find a job?" Mai Ding whined to himself.

His legs are sore because of too much walking and his forehead is now covered in sweat. If only An Ziyan let him drive one of his cars, maybe Mai Ding wouldn't be this tired. But what could he say? An Ziyan stated it clearly enough for him that he would never let Mai Ding drive again for his own safety.

When Mai Ding was passing by near a park and saw an empty bench, he rushed there quickly to get some rest before heading home. It seems that this day would be another day that he was coming home empty handed.

Mai Ding barely got proper rest when mere few minutes later he was disturbed by some noises. It looks like lady luck was really not on Mai Ding's side today. Only few meters away, he saw an aunty was getting harassed by two scary-looking guys. They tried to take the poor woman's bag while she was begging and almost crying. There was no one else around at the moment for her to ask some helps.

Being a man with justice he was, Mai Ding immediately stood up and stormed to the bad guys' direction. Somehow, before Mai Ding really could reach there, those two guys already noticed Mai Ding's arrival.

"What do you want, Kid? Helping her?" The guy with arm covered tattoos asked Mai Ding. They knew Mai Ding's intention and they thought Mai Ding's act was rather foolish. How stupid he could be to think that with such a small and frail body he had, he wanted to fight against them?

"Don't meddle with the other's business, Kiddo. You should know what's better for you. Go now, pretend that you saw nothing." The other guy said.

Mai Ding's heart thumped hard inside his ribcage. He was hesitating. These whole scenes felt oddly familiar. The last time he was facing the same situation bravely against the thieves', he was badly injured and had to be rushed to the hospital. An Ziyan wouldn't be happy either to see him trying to act like a hero again meanwhile he was far could be compare to a hero.

Relutantly, Mai Ding was taking steps back. I shouldn't be meddling. I shouldn't meddling. I shouldn't meddling. Mai Ding chanted in his mind. He was trying to put a blind eye to the one who looked at him pleadingly and ignore it.

One step....

Two steps...

Three steps...

And Mai Ding gave up. This wasn't like him at all. He might be nothing more than ordinary guy, had no specialties, but he definitely wasn't a coward. Mai Ding stopped and he turned his body around, once more facing the robbers in front of him.

"Hey, you know what? I won't go anywhere. At least not until the police comes and kicks your sorry ass." Mai Ding shouted.

Two robbers were looking each other, "Are you losing your mind, Kid? Do you want us to beat you into a pulp?"

"You are the one who will get beaten." Mai Ding held up his phone. "I called the police already; they will be here in no time."

The truth is... it's just a lie. Mai Ding didn't call the police yet. Oh, his phone even died hours ago. He just wanted to threat those bad guys.

It seemed that Lady Luck wasn't completely against Mai Ding today. From a far, he could hear the noise from police's car slowly approaching them. Maybe it was just police who did a regular patrol, Mai Ding never knew the truth, but he felt grateful. And Mai Ding knew the two robbers began to buy his lies.

"Shit!" Mai Ding heard the robbers cursed harshly.

Mai Ding thought just like that the robbers would run away, but how wrong he could be.

"This kid is brave enough to fight us."

"H-hey... what are you doing? Aren't you supposed to run? The police are coming!" Mai Ding stuttered when he saw those guys approaching him instead of run.

"Yes, we will run, but after we give you a lesson." They said. Just like that they push Mai Ding before he could react. When Mai Ding's body sprawled on the cold ground, they began to kick and beat Mai Ding without any mercy.

In the midst of his painful groans, Mai Ding could hear the woman who just he helped begging to the robbers to stop beating him. The sound from police's car was getting nearer and nearer, and finally they stopped beating Mai Ding.

The pain was unbearable and slowly unconsciousness engulfed Mai Ding completely into darkness.

An Ziyan, you were right, this world is such a terrible place.
