Five months later.

"Are you sure you are going to be able to cope with today?" Uncle asked.

I nodded.

"There will be a lot of emotions in that room. Lee will be on his best behaviour as instructed."

It had been five months since Lee tried to kill me. Five months since Conrad's father had put me under his protection and under his roof. Reassuring me Lee would not be able to kill me in there.

He had tried and one night in particular haunts me.

It was dark... as usual. I was sat reading a book by the light of the fire when I felt his presence. He wasn't allowed in the house but that didn't stop him smashing the window and taking a swipe at me. His claw catching my cardigan and dragging me towards him so fast I didn't have time to grab hold of anything. If Conrad hadn't appeared in his demon form and fought with him I would never have got away. I scrambled back into the house and locked myself in a special box. It was spelled to protect me so Lee wouldn't be able to get in. It had to be small, to be strong. I would lie in it, curled up in a ball and close the lid like a coffin. Conrad would let me out when it was over. There was air inside, again from a spell and it would also signal to his father that I was in trouble when the lid closed. Uncle was away arranging another part of my transition and he would be furious when he came back. I knew Lee had broke the rules that day as I felt the box being banged about. I was never able to hear the outside noise inside but I could hardly not notice being tossed around like luggage on a stormy sea. It turned out that the box was in Sebastian's hand, his giant demon form as he took me off with him and left them fighting.

For the rest of the time Uncle was away I stayed in the box like a good little puppet whilst Sebastian carried out his daily 'realm keeping chores' and came out when it was safe to stretch my legs, have something to eat and drink and use the loo. When Uncle returned he was beyond furious. He left and returned later to open the box and let me out. There was a man stood beside him and Sebastian. I recognised him a few moments later as Lee's grandfather.

"She is living in a box!" Uncle growled. "You know the difference in time between this realm and ours. You know how long that equates to and all because your grandson can't get control of himself. Does she look or smell like a threat to you?"

The man gave me a pitiful look and shook his head.

"I'm sorry," I whispered wanting to apologise for even thinking of hurting Suri.

"It is I who should be apologising," the man replied. "We brought you into this life and by doing so destroyed yours."

"My sister brought me into this life when it destroyed hers," I corrected him.

"And I am sorry for your loss," he added.

"Not as sorry as I am," I said closing my eyes to picture her face for strength.

"I will reprimand Lee..."

"No, he is just protecting his daughter," I replied agreeing with his actions and aware of his nature.

"Your daughter," he said trying to make eye contact but I continued to look to the side or to the ground to avoid it. He was very intense.

The room grew silent and thick with tension. I was still in the stood in the box so quickly lay back down and closed the lid. Breathing a sigh of relief in there.

That was months ago. It had been five months since Uncle and I had been back to his mansion together and back to Earth. Everything smelt funny. Tasted stronger and sounded louder.

"Mae," Uncle said snapping me out of another daydream. "It will be a test. They will stand you next to your husband."

I didn't reply as I had nothing to say. I would stand beside Lee and be inspected by the counsel as a new non-human. I would allow them to test me and make Uncle proud.
