Chapter 8Why do I have to be the one to look after this boy? Kora grumbled to herself as she prepared a temporary room for Bellamy. She had not approved of Morgin's decision to rescue Lucy or Bellamy, not that Morgin ever asked her opinion.
Kora instinctively fingered the panther amulet hanging around her neck; she had only been five years old when her parents died in a house fire in their sleepy English town. No not died, murdered.
The fire had burned everything to the ground; foundation and all. The strength and heat of the blaze led Kora to only one thing. A dragon had killed her parents, the flame burning too hot and too bright for anything else.
The necklace had been all that remained; it being infused with magic, it wouldn't have burned.
Kora had hoped she would find the dragon who had done it so she could kill it herself, but she never did. The fact that she was now preparing a place of residence for the same kind of creature that killed her parents made bile rise to her throat.
Well, this is as good as it will get. Kora thought as she surveyed her work. The house was built to be temporary; a small cot in the corner, wardrobe and sink in another.
Now I can go running.
Even though she rarely Changed most of the people in the camp knew Kora was a Mythic, a panther to be exact. Which was why no one paid any mind when a giant black cat with green eyes came galloping at top speed in between the buildings.
Kora often went running through the woods to clear her head. Every time Morgin sent her or any of the others on a rescue mission or some other fools errand, it left her exhausted. Kora did not enjoy being with this group, rescuing Mythics she didn't care about. She only stayed so she could find the dragon who killed her parents and kill him.
There was a certain pool in the deepest part of the forest at the base of the mountain that Kora had found once. It was a place that no one else knew about where she could relax, maybe read a book or draw.
Kora Changed into a human and began to wash the dirt and smoke smell off her skin.
Snap!
Kora immediately Changed and jumped out of the water. Teeth bared, snarl ready on her lips. Standing at the foot of a tree was the strangest creature Kora had ever seen; gray with a rat-like face and the size of a cat, the creature crawled out from the shadows to stare at Kora's crouching form.
Kora could sense that the creature wasn't a Mythic nor was it apart of nature. In truth she had never seen such a thing before.
"What are you?" Kora asked in the guttural voice of a panther.
"What I am does not matter, I am only a representative of my master." It squeaked.
"Who is your master?"
"He has been watching you closely, Kora." The creature ignored her question. "You must wait for his call, then your questions will be answered."
With that the creature scurried away, leaving Kora confused and questioning.
So that wraps up chapter 8. As always please read and vote if you like it.
