Chapter 9The church was nothing more than a small, white building with a steeple and two red doors that had long since fallen off their hinges. It clearly had been abandoned for some time; the roof had partly caved in and the wooden pews were rotten and smelled.
"Why are we here?" Bellamy looked around the room, as if the demons from his past were lurking behind every pew.
"I've found that it gives me comfort after a long day." Morgin ran his fingers down what was left of the cloth curtains.
Bellamy snorted. "I never really put much thought in religion."
"Oh, neither have I," Morgin smiled. "But there is something about the purity of belief that----"
"Look, I appreciate what you've done, rescuing me and all, but what am I doing here?" Bellamy interrupted, shifting from foot to foot.
"Ah, yes; forgive me I can ramble sometimes." Morgin chuckled uncomfortably then continued. "What we do here is help Mythics escape from the humans who hunt them; we sometimes even help humans who dare to shelter them."
Morgin studied Bellamy's face a moment before continuing.
"After getting whatever kind of medical treatment any of them may need, we take them to our more secure refuge in the mountains. Or we let them go, we always leave the choice up to them."
But you want to know why you're here, so I will tell you."
"Yes, I have ever since Kora rescued me from the----" Something clicked in Bellamy's mind. "She mentioned something about 'What was left of Virginia', what did she mean?"
Morgin avoided making eye contact with Bellamy; something that Bellamy noticed.
"Answer me!" Bellamy snarled, making the hair on Morgin's neck stand up.
"OK, I will tell you, but you must understand that it had nothing to do with myself or any other human here." Morgin took a step back.
"Tell me." Bellamy said through gritted teeth, his voice a low, guttural snarl.
"About a year ago, the governments of the world realized that the extremist Mythics had started using...... Questionable methods to get their point across; poison." Bellamy shrugged and shook his head, clearly telling Morgin that he didn't care about the war or the methods his people took in achieving victory. "The same governments began to develop tricks of their own; airborne viruses created specifically for Mythics."
Bellamy's eyes narrowed. A deep hissing sounded from his throat, Morgin's limited knowledge of dragons told him that this was when Bellamy was between calm and a raging storm. He needed to choose his next words carefully.
"But their plan backfired and the virus mutated, it began affecting humans as well as Mythics. It drastically reduced the world population, in many third world countries entire towns and cities were wiped out completely." Morgin stopped, seeing the expression of rage on Bellamy's face.
"Bellamy, I know you are upset, but this place, and the people in it, are not responsible for the actions of men and women in power." Morgin put his hands up in a calming manner; Bellamy seemed to be staring into his soul.
"Why should I believe you?" Snapped Bellamy, his eyes looked darker than what they were before, if that was at all possible.
"Because we only want to help; myself and the rest of the humans here want no part of the war, we just want everyone to live in peace."
"So why rescue me? That took violence, I killed many people there and I enjoyed it! So, why?" Bellamy advanced towards Morgin, his talons ready in case the wrong answer was given. Morgin hesitated a second too long. "Answer me!"
"It was because of Lucy, she's a Seer; that's what Mermaids are, they have abilities of the mind and some of them can even see the future." Morgin's voice became quiet. "She foresaw.... Something. Lucy saw a Darkness that would consume the world and everything on it. She came to me about it first, I don't know why; we had just met so she had no reason to trust me, but she did. We both went before the Mythic elders and pleaded with them to stop the war but they wouldn't listen. Lucy and I knew that in order to unite humans and Mythics against this oncoming storm then we would need an Alpha, but the last one died twenty years ago. We searched and searched for any sign of an Alpha, until we almost gave up. Then one day Lucy found a record of a birth that the local press had caught wind of right before Mythics were discovered to be real; it was a boy, his mother had disappeared and his father.... Well, his father, a Mythic, had been killed not long after the boy was born. That baby was you. I made a few bribes and found a report made five years ago saying that a white dragon had been captured and taken to Virginia for research. Lucy volunteered to go undercover to see if it was true and as it turned out it was."
"What's an Alpha?" Bellamy's talons retracted, but his eyes still warned of danger.
"An Alpha is a Mythic who is bigger and stronger than other Mythics. They're the leaders, chosen by default because they're the only ones who can unite all races both humans and Mythics." Morgin visibly relaxed.
"But why me?" Bellamy asked. Morgin started laughing suddenly which made Bellamy narrow his eyes.
"You just don't get it, do you?" Morgin continued to laugh until he was gasping for breath and wiping tears from his eyes. He suddenly became solemn. "Bellamy, the name of the Alpha who died was Dalen Ward. Your father."
