Chapter 12

"Kai!" Came a cold, haunting shout that echoed throughout the cavern. The raven haired man grimaced at the sound of the voice. That voice had been his only companion for as long as he could remember, and what he could remember was very little.

The man, quite small for a Mythic, looked out over a massive, black chasm somewhere in western Europe. He had been waiting there since the "incident" in Virginia.

Waiting for the voice to give him new orders. Waiting for..... He didn't know what else. Now that the voice was calling to him, he had to obey. The fool human had allowed Bellamy to escape, Kai had been punished severely for it.

He rubbed unconsciously at an invisible wound that was no longer there; every time he failed, his master would make him an example. There were others who served the dark, mysterious figure but Kai was his unfortunate favorite. If any of them made a mistake he would make sure Kai paid for it dearly.

He walked with nary a sound, muscles tense and coiled like a whip. The wind shrieking through the caves like banshees didn't seem to bother him nor the chill that constantly inhabited the stone walls.

The giant cavern was a place that made Kai feel small and vulnerable. As it was supposed to. The entirety of his master's reign was made up of fear and a hopelessness that would consume the soul so it would make sense that his place of residence would constantly remind one of that.

Kai passed a small group of children, none were older than thirteen and all were some type of Mythic, that were crowded around a smaller girl and were taking turns kicking her.

The brutal training that they all went through when they were far too young was designed to completely purge them of any emotion. This was their first lesson; destroy the weak and powerless.

Cold, obedient and completely without mercy by the time they're sixteen. Kai thought to himself as he continued walking, ignoring the cries of the girl being beaten. No, child, they will kill you if you show them you are weak.

But the girl kept whimpering. The man overseeing the children, a giant with a harsh complexion and burly limbs, was barking orders and cracking a whip in the damp air.

Kai blocked out the anguished cries of the little girl and continued walking. The great doors that led to his master's home were made from dark oak, designs of great beasts were carved into the wood. Giant cats, wolves, mermaids and two dragons fighting each other crawled their way up the sides and around a great tree. The last time he asked his master about the door, he had been beaten, muzzled and chained naked in the middle of the training arena as an example to the other children of what will happen if they question their master.

"Kai!" The memory made Kai shudder at the voice, he wanted to escape. Wanted to escape his master's reign of madness and cruelty, but Kai had been forced to endure too much too many times. He was bought, broken and trained to respond instantly to what the voice commanded.

Kai dared to entertain the notion that if he had just been abandoned somewhere else besides that lonely old church, then perhaps things would have turned out differently. He quickly shook his head, pushing the impossible wishes and "what ifs" back to the farthest reaches of his mind before opening the great oak door and going inside.
