No wind no movement, nothing to call life in the darkness. Complete and utter silence was all the night held. The heavy cloud wafted from the silvery moon to shine upon the land like the drawing of a curtain in the early morning sun. The stillness of the night was broken by an angry painful howl and a muffled thud. Halfway up the wintery mountain lying on a narrow shelf was a lone wolf with a coat so white they could have been snow itself. If it were not for the shadow of the human looming so high above them and the dark pool growing around it, none would have seen the creature. The human bent to pick up a mass from the ground, a rabbit or bird, perhaps, mangled and dead, shouldered his bow and walked away without so much as a glance back. If he had perhaps he would have seen the white wolf struggle to her feet before falling, toppling to the bottom of the mountain coming to rest in the only beam of silvery light in the forest floor. Perhaps he would have seen the wolf shifting into the form of a young woman.

The woman lay prone upon her back, the snow numbing her completely even the wound that bleed so freely the metal peaking right under her breast. The arrowhead had pushed right through her back and ribs ripping her lungs as it passed part of the shaft had busted as fell. This had not been the first time she had been attacked by the humans but as she watched the shadow slowly swallowing the moon she was convinced this would be her last. Darkness edged her vision as a being lifted her, speaking words she could not hear. She did not care, no her only thought was of a night much like this one so many years ago. With that her mind drifted into nothingness.

Fire…“save them”…I’M ON FIRE! The woman’s eyes shot open confused as to why she had trouble breathing, more importantly why an intense heat suffocating her. Her frightful dream forgotten when she had woke. She sat up only to fall back with a grimace her body enveloped in pain. A hand pressed to her cheek and instantly she bolted five feet away, in one jerk, despite the pain. Sitting up on a low bed a man with dark brown hair, sun darkened skin, and light blue eyes with a golden ring in them.

“You’re awake. Are you alright? What is your name?” he asked as he stood from the bed and in his full nudity walked towards her.

A deep growl rolled dangerously from her chest as she bared her teeth, causing him to stop in his tracks. Inside her mind her wolf warned, Show no pain.

He held his hands out in peace, “Whoa there honey. I’m not going to hurt you.”

He took a step forward but she stood her ground. A whine escaped her as the pain racking through her body caused her eyes to roll for just a moment. In that moment he stepped forward and tried to take hold of her. “Shhhh you’re alright just relax.”

She jumped again, this time having caught his sent. Wolf! Against humans you might have a chance but not a wolf, let alone a male so large.

She had realized that she too was in human form and nude. How long had it been since she had last taken the human form? Was her wolf right there was no chance?

No!” She could not accept that.

The male stepped again towards her but it was the door flap behind him that caught her attention. There was no time to think just act. She jumped upon him quickly knocking him over in his shock and jumped off just as quickly bolting out the flap. There were huts all around and other wolves in human form, mostly males, only spurring her into action.

Gritting her teeth in face of the pain she ran as fast as she could, slowed greatly. Behind her there were yells and a howl but she ran harder. Her breaths came in gasps, the air refusing to fill her lungs. Close behind the pounding of paws closed in on her. Not three feet from her they turned into feet. Something tackled her to the ground forcing pain to erupt in blinding flashes. She fought the pain as she fought the man who now restrained her on her back.
