Finally, he asked one question that he knew he regretted right after. “You spoke of charges, who were they and what happened to them?”
Her eyes flashed such a deep pain that it made him hurt, but she kept her face guarded. “I don’t remember.”
“You know you are a bad liar.”
“How do you know I’m ling?”
“You’ve done it enough in the past day, like about your name.”
Beyond all understanding she spoke for the first time about it to a man she hardly knew, “I was seventeen the night it happened. I really can’t remember much but I remember that I had gathered all of my siblings pups outside to watch the lunar eclipse when there was an attack of some kind. My elder siblings had entrusted their safe keeping to me but before I could have a chance to get them out there was fire all around us. I didn’t run I stayed with them trying to get them out but the next thing I know I woke up in the river my head pounding and my body scarred. The entire village was destroyed. I looked and there was nothing left, just corpses.”
There was an uneasy silence that passed between them, one of understanding but still she was scared that something was going to happen. She did not turn to him only stayed at the trees looking over the valley. She listened to him walk up behind her but did not touch her. He shifted restlessly like he wanted to say or do something but didn’t know how.
He took a deep breath and blurted, “Can I give you a hug?”
She turned instantly too him her eyes filled with concern, “Is there something wrong? Are you alright? Do you want to talk about it?”
He chuckled lightly, nervously, “No it’s not that. You just seem so sad, I thought it might help.”
She looked at him confused then looked down. “A hug it’s harmless enough.”
Weakness
“But it’s been so long since I had been comforted.”
Let a man you hardly know touch you like that though. To show emotions like this. WEAKNESS!
“But I kind of want to?”
It’s not safe.
“I don’t think he will hurt me.”
It is cold
“I trust him”
Why?
“I suppose.”
He opened his arms to her and she wrapped her arms about him feeling the warmth of his body against the cold. When he wrapped his arms around her she felt so safe that she didn’t want it to end but against her mental protests she pulled away from him. Nothing could be more than a casual friend even if she was joining his pack. She could not get involved. She gave a yawn because her body was tired from the run. “Take the bed I can sleep on the ground and have no problems.”
Tokala shock his head, “No. You are the injured one you should get the bed. I can sleep on the ground, it would be best.”
“I can’t let you do that.”
“I insist.”
“No, if you don’t take the bed then neither of us will,” She argued but in her head the wolf complained. Take the bed and don’t argue with the alpha. The word of the Alpha is law. You are part of his pack now you must obey.
“Fine,” he said and picked her up placing her on the bed and lying beside her, “We shall share. If that’s ok with you, that is?”
“Um I guess, it is going to get very cold out and without my fur I can’t keep warm very well.” She said and pulled the blanket over them. She melted into the warmth that he provided against the cold.
